Yesterday I made some candied peanuts as a fun way to get rid of some lightly-salted peanuts I didn't wanna eat plain. They were ok, I'd thought; they just kind of tasted like peanuts covered in sugar crystals, though. Nothing spectacular. I can munch on these a little bit.

Except today I've eaten half the container, spoiling both my lunch AND dinner XD so I guess they tasted better than I'd initially thought! Or maybe it's the fact that they're peanuts coated in sugar crystals, lmao

Remember those Bowsario AUs that I’d written about last year? I put the first one on AO3! I’m doing so partly because I realized that this fic was 3.5k words, so honestly this amount of work deserves to go on the Archive, partly because I’m trying to post at least one fic a month and this is a quick and easy thing to clean up so I can spend the rest of August working on my Sicktember fics, and partly because one of those Sicktember fics is set in this AU, so I wanted the context to be easily accessible.

But yeah, this fic is very “Mario has a bad time and Bowser is also there”, haha. It has some similar emotion writing to Ti voglio tanto bene. It’s a nice space to swirl around in, as I’ve probably said before.

I really love the closing lines for this fic. I’m almost sad that I used it up here, on a glorified outline. Oh, well.

Finished outlining the last of my Sicktember fills last night! This one was unlike my others where it was giving me a ton of trouble for no good reason. It only took mucking around with the fic's timeline and completely changing the setting to get it to flow properly 🙂 So, only a slight deviation from my original plan 🙂 So now I get to move forward in writing my annual 'gen sickfic about two minor villain characters that no one reads because it's a genfic about two minor villain characters' XD (but someone's gotta fill that AO3 relationship tag, so…)

A lot of my Sicktember fills this year only fill one prompt at a time, as opposed to knocking out multiple at once. I'm blaming that on the fact that I'm running out of ideas, haha. I wasn’t even sure that I was even going to do Sicktember this year, but the enthusiasm from some of my Tumblr mutuals drew me in regardless. Sickfic feels unusually restrictive to write, in an illogical way. The only thing I can compare it to is whenever I write romance and a page and a half or so goes by, and then I suddenly go "oh shit aren't they supposed to be blushing or something?" and then I have to go back and strategically place blushes and excess staring and whatnot. It's that except "whoops someone needs to sneeze or something I think". Deliberate in a way that feels a little bit tedious. Also, I don’t get sick very often, nor do I read a lot of sickfic myself. So what ends up happening is that the sickfic tends to have a more general whump quality to it; or at least, that's what my better sickfic feels like (yes, I know sickfic is a subgenre of whump, but the distinction matters to me, lmao). Overall, it makes me feel like I'm bad at writing sickfic. But I suppose that's not a crime, so...on I go.

Went to the store for some odds and ends and decided to buy myself a small-ish bag of Swedish Fish while I was out, because I like Swedish Fish. Halfway through the bag I wanted to throw it all in the trash 😭 I really can't handle that much sugar anymore...I dunno why I'd thought it'd be different this time 😭 I finished the bag anyway, though 🙂 In related news, I have a headache!

Also I've been alerted to the existence of Swedish Fish flavored Italian ice and it sounds heavenly. I looked it up and there's somewhere that sells it like an hour away from me... 🤔 Maybe I should go on an adventure to get some sometime soon...

UNO Reverse Kidnapping
The traditional courting rituals of Bowser's Kingdom weren't really known by those who didn't hail from within its borders. What even fewer knew was that the whole kidnapping thing King Bowser did was based on one of the last vestiges of said rituals, pulled forward by circumstance, convenience, and because some people are more of a romantic at heart than what they'd have you believe.
Understandably unaware of all this, Mario lays in the grass outside his home and wonders about the feasibility of kidnapping Bowser, for a change.
It turns out it's more feasible than Luigi insists it is.

I was introduced to the Royal Plumbing Polycule, aka Mario/Peach/Luigi/Bowser, about a year or so ago. It’s been swirling around in my brain ever since. It’s very silly, and it’s largely an interesting vehicle to explore a Peach & Bowser reconciliation process. Or at least that’s what my mind’s settled on. I might write down all my thoughts about the ship at some point, but for now, this is my first venture into writing them.

The plot is partly inspired by Return to Ithica by Useless19, in which it is posited that the kidnapping Bowser does is a remnant of his kingdom’s courtship rituals. I was also inspired by a different story idea post or two swirling around where Bowser is the one getting kidnapped for a change. So I mashed those ideas together; if kidnapping Bowser is equivalent to courting him, then how would he feel about it? Flustered, I bet. And that’s the backbone of this fic!

Tumblr Premium is...a choice.

What grinds my gears the most about it, I think, is that they're taking my existing $40/year Ad-Free Subscription and automatically both converting it to Tumblr Premium and renewing it at the Tumblr Premium price, which is $70/year. And the extra perks they're adding (one free TumblrMart item a month, one free Blaze a month, doubled post/queue/like limits, early access to "potential new features") are not worth the extra $30/year for me. So I cancelled the whole thing, lmao. It's a shame, because if they kept the Ad-Free as a lower tier of Tumblr Premium I would happily give the site the $40/yr until the end of time. But it is what it is, I suppose.

I started the year with mainly a list of potential projects to do over the course of it. I also had one main goal that appeared early in January: to post one fic to my AO3 account every month. Mainly because I think future-me will find it very funny. And because I already almost did this last year by complete coincidence; I just missed March and August. And I can clear out a bunch of my shorter WIPs this way, too.
Because of this new goal, though, a lot of my planned projects have taken a backseat. But still, I've made progress on a few of them!

One of those is making a personal Neocities website. I'd say it's about 70% done, at this point; It's almost done enough to go live, anyway. Mainly need to fill in a few more pages and change the site's color scheme/backgrounds. I have color pallets and tileable images picked out for those, but fiddling with the CSS feels too annoying to bother with currently. It'll probably not be that bad when I actually sit down with it, though.

Another project is doing a little analysis of my own fic, mainly about the amount of words until the first line of dialogue in them but also about whatever's interesting. I've gathered the stats for that and a bunch of other stats about all the fics I've ever written in a big spreadsheet. I also got a Tableau account? A free version of one, anyway. It's been so long I don't remember the specifics. But anyway I can make cool visualizations if I want to. Which I do!

The third project that I've gotten to this year was making an AO3 collection for fics of one of my blorbos that actually feature him as a prominent character and not a lamppost with a magic wand taped to it. This one is interesting because I'm not actually going to make a collection anymore; I'm going to use an alt account to bookmark all the fic that fit my criteria instead and tag those bookmarks appropriately. I also want to expand this system to a different character who is in even less fic, because I think she's neat. So even if I didn't actually do this project, figuring out its bounds and scope was still important!

Additionally, I want to add a few things to this list of goals and projects. The first is the subgoal of finishing the self-shipping section of my website. I've never written that much about my self-inserts and OCs before outside my brief foray into self-shipping Tumblr, and I've got like years of lore in this head of mine. So that will be a challenge!

The next few's inclusion is dependent if I start them before the year ends or not. There's a category of video game-related goals - finish LoZ: Tears of the Kingdom, play LoZ: Ocarina of Time 3D, get back into Ring Fit Adventure, play The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, play Chicory: A Colorful Tale, play the Xenoblade Chonicles 3 DLC. There's also the goal to read some real books, lmao. I've got a decent to-read pile on StoryGraph! Looking forward to finally reading the Murderbot Diaries, among others!

(Also it would be cool to learn how to cross-stitch. And paint some more rocks.)

Today marked the second Tumblr blog in my mutual/mutual-in-law circle this month that up and vanished out of nowhere, lmao. The first was wrongfully termed by Staff (they eventually got their blog back) and today someone accidentally deactivated their blog or something. Or maybe some glitch in the Tumblr matrix mysteriously fired off and now their blog is unrecoverable. Honestly, I can believe it, all things considering. I know I literally backed up my main blog a few weekends ago but now I kinda wanna do it again, haha. Just in case...!

It's kind of cute, though; a bunch of the second person's mutuals spent today banding together about it, haha. There's a whole Google Doc of recovered posts and everything! Operation...something or other; I don't remember what they're calling their efforts. But still, it's a very kind thing to do, I think.

Ever since finding a couple of toki pona videos last month I've wanted to learn the language So. Bad. But I haven't been able to carve away time to actually start learning it, so all I've been able to do so far is stare longingly at the books I bought to do so sitting on my bookshelf, lmao. Hopefully soon!!! There's a video playlist that teaches both the words and the symbols, I think, and that's kinda what I wanna start with. Because I heard that learning the symbols alongside the words is the easiest way to do it. And the symbols are cute, so I wanna learn them!

Today was a very productive day in that I finally crossed off a long-standing to-do item: downloading all the Backyardigans episodes from the YouTube playlist to my external hard drive. This list item is the entire reason I bought a VPN, because most of the videos in the playlist aren't available in my country (USA). But now I've got the kids show I grew up with preserved for me to watch offline whenever I want!

I also managed to back up my selfshipping and NFSW Tumblr blogs today, so that's another win for me. My main blog's technically already backed up, but also I might go through and manually save-as on individual posts at some point, because I'm not sure the Tumblr blog backup tool I used did what I wanted the way I wanted it. It was kind of confusing. There aren't that many posts I'm itching to save, anyway; a lot of it's duped in other places.

Working on the Royal Plumbing Polycule fic (and figuring out where it sits in my mental timeline of the ship) and I have become plagued with the idea of making all four of them aromantic. Aroallo!Luigi would be so interesting... I was initially poking at it from a "Luigi is shipped with all the villains" angle — like if maybe he's with the villains in that way because none of them are thinking of him in a romantic lens, due to being evil or whatever. A flimsy and practically stereotypical viewing of it, but expanding my brain to other ways this identity interacts with him as a person creates some interesting threads to weave together.

Thinking further, I think that aroace!Mario/alloace!Peach/aroallo!Luigi/alloallo!Bowser would be cool, too. A bit too symmetrical, though, isn't it? Maybe Bowser can be alloaro, too. Or aroace. Either way, this is shaping up to be one giant QPR, lmao.

But anyway, this fic is this year’s magnum opus for sure, and it’ll sit next to last year’s — no words can say how much I care. Wonder what it’ll be next year?

Didn’t wanna derail a Tumblr post I saw this morning, but it had me idly wondering - do you think there’s a bowsario fic or art piece out there where Luigi’s the overprotective hardass about the relationship, similar to Mario in some bowuigi stuff? I know there are fics where Peach is bent out of shape about it (usually from a political standpoint).

I know this idea comes up against the general older/younger brother stereotyped dynamic, and Luigi’s wariness of Bowser in general, but c'mon he should get to push past that at least once to give Bowser a bit of shit about whether he’s good enough for Mario or not. As a treat. Because it would be funny (or at least I think so).

It doesn't have to be a sustained thing, either — he could give a shovel speech (interrogation). Do a little spying. Maybe rig something embarrassing to happen as a test. Otherwise leverage those sweet sweet 'annoying younger brother' points. Or maybe it can be less comedic, I'm just comedy-brained. Or maybe he can be a yandere I dunno, lmao.

One of my mutuals brought up that the Mario bros would have different styles of shovel talking, and I totally agree! Makes me half-tempted to try for a tangent about what happens to the poor sap that decides to date Peach, if it isn't either of the two of them XD

And a little bit to someone else’s (very good) point, I'm kind of wondering now about if Mario, like, would know Luigi's out here doing all this? Because on one hand, most of the point of being this petty about your brother's date is that your brother doesn't see you doing it. And Bowser's not going to just come out and admit Luigi's successfully intimidating him because 1) despite what he's just learned Luigi's (cowardly yet kind) reputation still precedes him in most circles — he's the Koopa King; he's not going to let on that he thinks Luigi is scary, of all people — and 2) if he expresses any negative opinion about Luigi, Mario's probably going to be on his ass about it and Bowser doesn't want Mario mad at him with what might be considered baseless accusations.

But on the other hand, Mario's known Luigi for Luigi's whole life so he knows exactly how petty he can be, and that this behavior would 100% be up his alley. But even then Mario would only tell Luigi to tone it back rather than stop completely if he found out; if he demanded him stop then he would be conceding his right to be an equally overprotective hardass to whoever Luigi ends up dating, and he sure as hell isn't giving that up!

Love being an adult. Meant to finish my fanfic draft but ended up reading about social media financials all afternoon. I barely even know fuck-all about financials in general. But nonetheless, the Firefox text-to-speech lady is telling me about the history of cohost financial updates. I'll need to find stuff about Pillowfort's financials at some point; after all the discussions I've read today about both cohost's financial updates and its general site culture vs others I'm tempted to dust that account off again, tbh.

A day before our concert and we get an email that there were 12 people who both tested positive for COVID and were at the previous day's dress rehearsal. Which is. Fine. What a day to forget my mask at home 🙃
