When Toadsworth stepped into the dining room, the sudden pop! was certainly a surprise.

“Come now,” he huffed, wiping stray confetti off his mushroom cap. “My birthday's long since passed, you know.” Despite his protests, his grin was wide.

Peach pocketed her party popper, dancing over to him. “ ‘Long since’? It’s only been a few days!” she said. “But a birthday hardly counts if you're sick for it!”

“I seem to recall a slice of cake on my nightstand appearing in between naps the day of, candle and all,” Toadsworth replied. “Was that not celebration enough?”

“Nope!” Peach beamed, unrepentant. “You get another one, because you deserve it!”

Toadsworth chuckled. It ended with a cough. “Fair enough, I suppose.”

Peach bent down to squeeze him in a hug. She also handed him a card. “Your art gets better every year, my dear,” he said when he opened it, staring at it fondly.

“I’d hope so,” Peach said. “But one day I’ll find those first few birthday cards I’d drawn and get rid of them,” she continued halfheartedly.

“You’ll do no such thing!” Toadsworth sniffed. “Those are very important memories, I’ll have you know!”

Before Peach could reply, Mario came through the door to the kitchen, carrying a plate of warm pancakes — one of the last pieces of breakfast to complete the spread already on the table. Luigi trailed behind him, carrying a wrapped gift box. He nervously presented it to Toadsworth as he approached the head of it, fidgeting as Toadsworth carefully unwrapped it. Inside was a book, cover worn and well-loved with a title Toadsworth had never seen before but a summary that promised to be right up his alley. Toadsworth thanked him warmly for it, promising to discuss its contents with him as soon as he finished it, and stifled a chuckle as Luigi slumped in relief.

Toadsworth carefully placed the book on the table, and hopped into the nearest chair. He looked over the spread of food before him. “Well then,” he said, brow raised. “I’m certainly not expected to eat all of this by myself, am I?”

As if he’d been waiting his entire life for that invitation, Mario doesn't even bother to sit down before scooping a spoonful of fruit salad and shoving it into his mouth. Everyone else couldn't help but laugh at his enthusiasm, settling in their chairs for a pleasant family breakfast.

House cleaning! I've had this extension in my WIP folder for a while. I think it was originally going to fill a Feveruary prompt, but it's way too late now XD But here it is anyway!

I dunno if this fic is good or not; I just wanted to posit the idea of Peach making Toadsworth handmade birthday cards ever since she was a toddler. It’s a fun concept!

Also Mario’s gift was breakfast and Luigi’s was one of his old books that he wanted to share. They had to cobble together things at the last minute because they didn’t know Toadsworth’s birthday was today until just recently.
