I used to think writing nonverbal!Mario was easier when writing in his POV vs an Outside POV, but after working on one WIP in his POV and outlining another fic in Bowser’s POV almost at the same time it’s almost like the opposite now?
I mean, the main difference between the two is that in Mario’s POV you can have characters respond directly to his thought processes and skip trying to figure out how he expresses those processes (I personally refer to this as cheating, because…it feels like cheating, haha). Whereas in an Outsider POV he has to actually, like. Express those processes outwardly. At least a little bit. So since the crutch of stuffing what I need Mario to express in the narration is removed in an outsider POV story, in being forced to actually consider how to express Mario says things everything somehow comes out easier…? Somehow?
I think it might be ‘cause of my writing style developing a little; I find that I like to try to minimize the amount of dialogue that exists whenever possible, because dialogue is the most "seemingly difficult" thing for me to do. So maybe that plus my fondness for body language and action beats is why writing nonverbal!Mario’s never really been a struggle for me, heh.
I dunno, I’m trying to write this Mario POV fic in Mario’s POV but it keeps drifting to Peach’s when I’m not paying attention ^_^; Which is fine! It’s just funny. I swear I used to have the opposite problem…!
...And it turned out I did! Checked my notes and it turns out this is cyclical — had this same crisis but backwards last year, whodathunkit. All because I couldn’t figure out how he'd apologize nonverbally in outsider POV...how silly.
I wonder if I’ll ever get back to the point where writing Mario POV gets easier again...I don’t really have much Mario POV stuff on the docket for the rest of the year though so who knows! Maybe next year I’ll have another crisis!
