While doing research on the WIP that's distracted me from my main WIP, I had it in my head that Peach was involved in making the Mario Parties happen, but I went through the wiki and I'm super wrong!

For instance, Toad and Mario come up with the initial idea to host a Mario Party in Mario Party 1 and both Mario Party 6 and Super Mario Party, respectively.

There are many of the games that have hosts that aren't from the main Mario cast:

Millennium Star (Mario Party 3)
Party Cube Gang (Mario Party 4)
Star Guards/Star Spirits (Mario Party 5)
MC Ballyhoo (Mario Party 8)
the Party Islands (Mario Party: Island Tour)

And some that are:

Toadsworth (Mario Party 7)
Toad (Mario Party: The Top 100)
Toad, Toadette, and Kamek (Super Mario Party)
Koopa Troopa (Mario Party Superstars)
Kamek (Super Mario Party Jamboree)

Also, Mario Party 10 is staffed by Toads (so I guess they're the hosts?), and there's no host that I can see for Mario Party: Star Rush; it's just a disembodied narrator? (That game is so strange...)

As for the other games — Mario Party 2, Mario Party Advance, Mario Party DS, and Mario Party 9 — they use the Mario Party format as more of a vehicle to tell the story of an adventure, rather than a setting for a game to play. So that's pretty neat. You learn something new every day!

Still, though, despite all this evidence, in my heart Peach was head of logistics for at least some of these Mario Parties. Love and light to Mario and Toad (and Koopa Troopa as well, I suppose), but I don't think they're quite capable enough to do it on their own, lol. Event organizers they aren't!

I love an inexperienced Bowser that gets by on luck and bravado and raw charisma, lol. I also love it when it’s paired with Luigi being a total freak, hence the Honeymoon Bag XD

This fic was also partially inspired by an old coworker who'd told me how he and his wife had spent their wedding night eating cold leftover pizza on the floor of a hotel room because they were too tired for anything else. Weddings, man. They’re just big parties you have to host, yeah? So much stress! Wouldn’t catch me dead having one.

A Surprise Visit
Despite all appearances and assumptions, Bowser could, in fact, be quite stealthy when he wanted to be.
Luigi's the unlucky one to find this out, after he's snatched away in the middle of the night from outside the Mushroom Castle. He has no idea where Bowser's taking him, but the path is starting to look kind of familiar…

I feel like I keep saying this, but I feel like I’ve unlocked a new type of emotional writing ever since Ti voglio tanto bene. The sections where Luigi’s reflecting on how much stress he’s under hits and flows really good.

I need to practice writing argument, though. MAN, that was tricky. Don know how I managed to figure it out, to be honest. Also there was this one bit where Luigi’s on the ground crying and originally I was going to have him begging but I couldn’t figure out how to do that without making it feel like a kink, lmao. And that wasn’t what I was going for, here XD

I wrote the ending of this fic in future tense because it felt right. I’ve done it before, but that was more of a “bonus scenes” context. Here it's in the same storyline, it's just that I didn’t wanna write it very detailed-like, haha. Being broader worked in its favor, as far as the mood was concerned.

It’s just a rant and I’m being super overdramatic, lol. But the TL;DR is sometimes Word of God is a mistake and maybe we should consider it less?

Ok so.

The post in question exposed to me a quote from I guess a dev of Mario Odyssey? Or something? But the quote is: “I’ve always thought that Mario carries a bit of a torch for Peach. I think that’s true even back in the 2D Mario games. If not, he wouldn’t be wasting his time rescuing her over and over again.”

Which is like. Hey. Why are we implying here that if Mario wasn’t romantically involved with Peach, then he wouldn’t be rescuing her at all? That’s it's a “waste of time?” As if any incarnation of Mario would see saving someone from being kidnapped and held hostage a “waste of time”? Why are you presenting a version of Mario who would theoretically leave someone to a tyrant because of something like the absence of romantic love? The cynicism on display here is making me go crazy. Like, you see what he does for complete strangers, time and time again, in so many games! But no, let’s set aside his kindness and courage and compassion and sense of what’s right and reduce it to…*waves hands around vaguely* whatever the hell this is. Something that does such a disservice to Mario’s character and motivations, and puts Peach in kind of a weird spot to boot.

ALSO THE THING IM ACTUALLY MAD ABOUT THE MOST: Surely the mareach shippers have better food than this??? They’re constantly being given 3-course meals from all different directions why are they digging through dirt-covered crumbs at the bottom of the barrel to show off quotes like this??? Guys??? We good???

Anyway, Word of God was a mistake and I don’t know why fandom glorifies it so much these days. And I suppose in saying this quote in the first place, this guy is saying more about how he thinks of relationships with women than anything actually pertaining to Mario’s character. So, you know. See the top of this paragraph.

(This feels like something to throw a buzzword at, too. Amatonormativity? Heteronormativity? I dunno.)

A Heart’s Premature Lament
Alone in the house on Valentine’s Day, both the flu and his near-guaranteed imminent loneliness loom over Mario.

This fic got a little close to my heart as well. All narratives involving the inevitability of being left behind are aromantic narratives (half-serious).

It was nice writing a sickfic where I actually engage with the “sick” part of it; usually I just gloss over it. But playing around with the timing and intensity of each symptom was rather fun!

This year I set out to post at least one fic every month, because I almost inadvertently managed it last year and it will be very amusing in hindsight. Well, I'm happy to say that as of today I've managed it! So that's exciting. It definitely got tougher near the end of the year because I got really busy all of a sudden. All in all, I'm happy I never have to do this again, lmao. And I'm excited to get to work on some multi-chapter fics next year!

Anyway I wanted to list all the fics-per-month I've written, hehe. For months where I wrote more than one fic I'll just pick my favorite!

So that's 12 fics plus 10 extras, totaling around 49.5k words! Looking forward to writing less next year, hopefully. I have a bunch of other hobbies I'd like to catch up on, too, like my video game backlog or my Neocities site or even seeing if my melodica is still viable to play after sitting in its case unused for almost 5 years, haha (I should probably buy a new one). Maybe I'll even start going to the library again... 🤔

you're at the bottom, this is it
After so many kidnappings and unwanted advances by Bowser over the years, an especially trying night at the end of which she’d gotten kidnapped by him again has Peach finally snapping and letting him have it. This is some of the aftermath.

This fic exists because I had a hankering for writing this part of the timeline, the low point Bowser has to hit and the uncomfortable truths that have to be dragged forward for him to truly be part of this polycule. Also, I had the image of Kamek kneeling next to a Bowser in his shell, talking to him and threading a hand through his spikes, similar to how he did in Chapter 9 of A Dream of Sunny Skies.

What Peach says exactly isn’t very important, so I didn’t bother writing it. The only important thing was Bowser’s reaction. And sure, he had been terrible to her in the past and she’s definitely justified in snapping and letting him have it, but her words are still allowed to sting, you know? I didn’t want there to be any winners here. Not Bowser, who’s fledgling character development was just harshly stuck down, not Peach, who was filled with a fury she’d never felt before, and now has to sit with how cruel she’s capable of being and the emotional crash that follows, not Luigi, who inadvertently kickstarted this whole mess and had had his own fair share of being yelled at, not Mario, who is forced to be a bystander to this entire ordeal. But they’ll recover from this!

A Reframing
So it turns out getting trapped in portraits a few times changes your opinion on other types of magical paintings, too.

This fic was conspired by this little comic, where Mario is afraid of portraits & paintings in a post-Luigi’s Mansion world.

I like the idea of the skylight that gets you into the Wing Cap level just being a workplace hazard every few months, lol. Don’t look up at the light; the time it’ll take to get you out will eat into your lunch break!

Honestly, I don't think Mario himself realized he was afraid of jumping into the paintings until he got to that room and actually thought about what he would have to do to get to Bob-omb Battlefield, upon which he got a surprise spike of terror about it that he didn't know how to deal with. So he defaulted to trying to pretend it didn't exist. Which was a poor choice, in the presence of the person who knows him the best besides himself, haha.

And I didn’t want to have Luigi confront Mario about his fear, because one thing that’s kind of lame in other Mario & Luigi stories is that scenes like this tend to be super overwrought and melodramatic, lmao. And I’d personally rather die than go that route. So! We swerve around it!

Bowser is very much used to Kamek grumbling under his breath about the amount of work he has to do, work that Bowser gives him more often than not. But Kamek always pulls through with good results, so Bowser never pays said complaining any mind. Maybe he should have been doing so, instead of taking Kamek’s efforts for granted.

I really wanted Bowser to realize that he overworks Kamek, so this fic was born. Also, the imagery of Bowser turning around mid-conversation to find Kamek passed out on the floor behind him was just too funny to pass up, lmao.

I like the argument Bowser and Kamek have, in the hallway outside the medical wing. Took a lot of effort to shape that, but it paid off. I also like hos astute Bowser Junior is. Maybe too astute, but whatever. Folded the “Junior died during Mario Galaxy” headcanon in here because I wanted to.

I’m also unreasonably delighted with the transmogrification/transmog-er-ation/trans-morgan-ratio joke.

This fic exists because I couldn't stop thinking about the idea of Mario waking up from some sickness or coma or whatever, and the first thing he’s concerned about is not his own wellbeing or circumstances, but that his brother went so long without shaving or brushing his hair and how fucking weird and uncharacteristic that is. Eventually what that lack of personal grooming implies about Luigi’s mental health state pushes its way to the forefront of Mario’s mind, but initially it’s just “???????” for a solid couple of minutes, at least.

I was envisioning Mario having gotten hit by a curse or something that rendered him unconscious. Actually, I was thinking of it like a Princess Peach game; Mario goes down, and Peach is the one going out and getting what they need to wake him up. The castle would be the hubworld, and when you returned after every level or every world you could find Luigi in various parts of the castle; near the beginning of the adventure he’s almost exclusively by Mario’s bedside, later on he’s in the castle library gathering intel to figure out where Peach needs to go next, and later still he alternates between the previous two locations or wandering the halls or standing outside in the gardens a little more relaxed and confident that they’ll wake Mario up soon. Maybe he even joins Peach in the final boss battle, if there is one.

There wasn't anything particularly special about the morning Luigi woke up with a weird feeling in his chest.

I literally saw this prompt and thought of this idea immediately, lmao. The plot, the fic title, all of it. It was great.

There was a jokey theory floating around somewhere just after PMTOK released that posited that the reason Luigi was so chaotic/silly in that game was because he had the Chaos Heart in him influencing his actions to be, well, more chaotic. This is a theory I have been low-key obsessed with since reading it. I know that there are a variety of angsty directions this idea can go in, but — as boring as it is — to me the Chaos Heart is just, like. Domesticated. Just vibing in there, giving Luigi passive buffs like being able to survive things he shouldn’t sometimes. It does have a vested interest in its perfect host staying alive, after all.

This one took a whole lot of workshopping to get right, even if the idea was easy. The hardest part was figuring out how the Chaos Heart was going to manifest itself; i.e. how Luigi was going to get injured so that the Chaos Heart could inexplicably prevent all damage. After a few voice memos, I settled on Luigi getting hit by a car, and then everything else fell into place (e.g. what car? → a car in New Donk City → why are they there? → they’re there because of a referral)

Poisoned Mix-ups
Kammy didn't want to be at this mixer, really. Doubly so when Kamek gets himself poisoned.

Here’s my annual Kamek and Kammy fic that no one reads! 🥳 Set out to maybe give Kammy a W, this time, mostly failed XD

This fic changed quite a bit from the initial idea! They were supposed to be in a hospital, and then after bickering for a while Kammy would reveal that she got access to Kamek’s medical information by claiming to be his spouse, to his chagrin (and hers). But the conversation wasn’t flowing right, so they ended up back in their hotel instead. The rewrite also makes this fic occur they were younger than in canon, for sure. How much younger? I dunno. I suppose it doesn’t quite matter, in the end.

Also, I added myself to the last scene, hehehe. Love that for me!

Visiting Mario in his tower had inexplicably become something routine, for Bowser. Until this visit, when Mario doesn’t answer Bowser’s calls for him.

I firmly believe if you leave Kamek alone for long enough without the ability to do any evil or even a spot of mischief, he is going to a) start cleaning, b) start fussing, or c) do both a and b at once, somehow. The caretaker instinct runs strong, hehehe. Also, I think Kamek has some long-buried attachment to Luigi given that for a short while, he was under Kamek's care as a baby when his was kidnapped in the events of Yoshi’s Island.

Another Royal Plumbing Polycule fic! Again, the most interesting part of this polycule to me is the chance to have Bowser and Peach reconcile. I wanted to show them getting along a little more with this fic; Peach thawing out a little bit and Bowser exhibiting growth by acting normal when the pretty girl’s wearing your clothes, lol. This entire fic series is being written out of order, and that might negatively impact what I’m, going for, but whatever.

Also I wrote that whatever Peach is sick with is something Bowser couldn’t get, but in hindsight if she’d got a Mushroom-related illness, then the Goombas might be at risk of getting it. Whoops.

Fainted Memories
Peach wakes up in her bed feeling incredibly disoriented. It takes her a bit to fully remember what had happened to get her there.

Wrote this on a whim, only took like an hour or two! Even though I’m busy with Sicktember prep OTL. But this idea came pretty much fuilly formed so I had to write it down, haha

It’s recently come up in conversation a few times that I write Mario fanfic; I’ve started elaborating to say that I write fics where Mario’s nonverbal because hardly anyone else writes him as such. And the shock and incredulity I get about the idea of people out there writing Mario as someone who talks waters my crops and hydrates my soul, tbh.

"But [not talking]'s like his whole THING!" they say.
"I KNOW!" I reply. And then I say that the recent movie emboldened the people who write him like that 🤭 It's such a fun and delightful way to be completely validated~

(that reminds me tho I need to update my not-verbal Mario collection! I think we're just above 80 fics in it now, which is pretty cool)

Remember those Bowsario AUs that I’d written about last year? I put the first one on AO3! I’m doing so partly because I realized that this fic was 3.5k words, so honestly this amount of work deserves to go on the Archive, partly because I’m trying to post at least one fic a month and this is a quick and easy thing to clean up so I can spend the rest of August working on my Sicktember fics, and partly because one of those Sicktember fics is set in this AU, so I wanted the context to be easily accessible.

But yeah, this fic is very “Mario has a bad time and Bowser is also there”, haha. It has some similar emotion writing to Ti voglio tanto bene. It’s a nice space to swirl around in, as I’ve probably said before.

I really love the closing lines for this fic. I’m almost sad that I used it up here, on a glorified outline. Oh, well.
