Challenge #13

In your own space, rec three fanworks that you did not create.

*cracks knuckles* oh I was so ready for this...!

I was gonna do a 'Favorite Fics of 2022' thing anyway, but I figured I could roll it into this challenge, instead! ^_^ I tried to pick fics I hadn't recced yet, or at least recced that much.

Anyway the challenge asked for 3, I did 50, you know how it is sometimes~

Ace Attorney
A Place to Rest Her Head by echoing_sound | Maya Fey & Phoenix Wright | Gen | Rated G | 4,819 words
Maya thinks she's good at hiding when she doesn't feel well. But Phoenix knows her a little too well by now to know something's up.

do it for her by TortillaKun | Maya Fey & Phoenix Wright | Gen | Rated G | 3,392 words
Maya is sick and doesn't want to go home. With no medicine at the office, Phoenix goes on a little trip to the store to get her something to help, having to deal with his own nerves to make her feel better.

Forgetmenots and Marigolds by RokettoMusashi | Franziska von Karma & Miles Edgeworth & Gregory Edgeworth, (background) Franziska von Karma/Maya Fey | Gen | Rated G | 7,469 words
“Truthfully, my intent was to ask you if…” he trails off, clears his throat, re-tries, “I wanted you to accompany me.”
Franziska blinks once, twice. “Accompany you?” she shakes her head, looking at him incredulously. “To—to Gregory Edgeworth’s
channeling, Miles? Am I to understand that’s what you’re asking?”
He balls up a little, fidgeting with his sleeve. A short nod, strong even in its lack of confidence.

gone off to the coast by RokettoMusashi | Manfred von Karma | Gen | Rated G | 1,361 words
The courthouse is burning. Manfred burns with it.

I'm Tired and I Don't Wanna by Hextoons | Phoenix Wright & Larry Butz | Gen | Rated T+ | 812 words
Phoenix’s first time in a trial doesn’t go as well as he’d hoped in any way. Good thing Larry is there in the aftermath.

Strahlender Karmaritter by RokettoMusashi | Franziska von Karma & Miles Edgeworth | Gen | Rated T+ | 15,125 words
Papa had said 'knights in shining karma,' and Franziska wishes that was a little more literal, because she thinks perhaps if she had a sturdy, sharpened sword in her hand and the demons of the people were literal manifestations she could slice to ribbons, the cold burning in her chest might be assuaged.
But she’s a knight only in metaphor and her riding crop’s a little dull, so instead she prosecutes.
[introspective character fic about Franziska and Miles through the years]

Tender Loathing Care by RokettoMusashi | Franziska von Karma & Phoenix Wright | Gen | Rated G | 2,771 words
Was it not enough that Franziska was doing the work of four people while sick with the flu? Was it not enough that the seasonal plague had circumvented vaccination, dared to try her otherwise bulletproof immune system? Now Phoenix Wright had to be meddling around her office, too?

Warm Drafts by Pyrasaur | Dick Gumshoe/Miles Edgeworth | M/M | Rated T+ | 2,881 words
Despite having no actual proof that Edgeworth likes Steel Samurai, Gumshoe presents him with a hand-written fan fiction.

(with love) from me to you by RokettoMusashi | Franziska von Karma/Maya Fey | F/F | Rated G | 3,181 words
Their holiday being cut short by Maya coming down sick, well, that was something Franziska didn't mind at all—it was lovely to look after her, and any time spent with her wife was time she found deep joy in.
Her job pulling her away from an ailing Maya's side? Well, she was slightly more furious about that, but Franziska von Karma is nothing if not resourceful.

12/14 chapters (Incomplete)
After the Christmas argument about Harry's Firebolt, Hermione decides that she's not putting up with the boys' sulking anymore, and she's going to do something about it. What happens next is a testament to the strong bonds forged through people actually talking to each other, the desperation involved in keeping your best friend alive and in one piece, and the desire to build a better, safer world for him to live in, no matter what the objections from the adults.

Turnabout: An Ace Attorney Musical
Finally got around to watching the last of Juno Song's Origami King's "With Lyrics" videos, and this one doesn’t disappoint. It's very easy to fuck up giving an instrumental song lyrics, but Juno knocks it out of the park in writing them, way beyond the basic level of making sure the rhythms and syllables match up properly. He does most of the voice acting and singing too, and he's very good at it! His other With Lyrics videos, both for Origami King and in general are worth checking out, too; he's really good at lyric writing.

Songs of Time
A friend recommended the Songs of Time album by NateWantstoBattle (Nathan Sharp) to me earlier in 2022 and it's was a really cool listen! The whole album goes through the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and while I've never played the game, it's a really good take on the themes of it. It's like a musical, almost!

Rising Kingdom
A Minecraft music video! This one was a blast from the past. I remember watching Fallen Kingdom years ago, and look where we are now! Anyway this video is a delight; the song is a banger and the visuals are stunning and the animation is gorgeous. Which might sound ridiculous, because its Minecraft, but! It's still really good and you should at least listen to it~ ^_^

The Wind Waker and the Apocolypse
This video essay about the Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker was a really thoughtful look at how the game portrays itself, cartoonish despite the post-apocalyptic setting, the messages it imparts the player with, and how it slots in with the rest of the franchise. This video is really engaging, too; the hour flew by! (And it offers a pretty good explanation as to why Tetra was fridged the moment she [REDACTED] - there's a thematic reason!)

Ocarina of Time vs Wind Waker

This piece of Wind Waker/Ocarina of Time meta was interesting as well~ It compares the themes of the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and the Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker! It's really in depth! Their thesis statement is as follows:

> Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker are both, at their core, stories about growing up. But OoT is about the trauma of being forced to grow up too soon, while WW is about the triumph of voluntarily stepping forward into adulthood. Almost every facet of the two games contrasts in a way that illustrates this point. Moreover, I think this was deliberate. WW was the first big console release of the franchise to feature a new Link since OoT, and the game refers heavily to OoT in its lore. I think the devs were going for something thematically very different, and oh boy did they succeed.

And they pull examples from the game to prove this, comparing and contrasting aspects of the two games such as the Call to Adventure, the Guiding Companions, the Zeldas, the Triforce of Courage, the Adventure's End, etc. Its very interesting having it all laid out!

I’m Going to Change Your Mind About Manfred von Karma: An Essay
[tumblr.com profile] musashi made a post recently about Manfred von Karma from Ace Attorney, and the flaws with his fanon interpretation of being a child abuser. Not only is it an effective counter to the popular fanon while still being kind about the motives of interpreting him that way yet firm about how incorrect they are, it's also written in a way that's easy to digest and not so so formal, you know? Like -

> the problem is that this opinion has become SO parroted (hahaha, like the– like in the game when–like wh–) that it has now been more or less canonized in the eyes of this swath of people. it is not canon. it is a headcanon. i will hereby be referring to this headcanon’s version as “fanfred,” because it’s fucking funny and my clown shoes honk and squeak as i move.

> what is more compelling? miles and franziska finding out the truth, and shrugging it off with a, well, that makes some sense. or miles and franziska, curled up in one another’s arms in an empty house in germany, desperately combing their memory in tatters trying to look for a sign, any sign, anything they could have pinpointed that could have clued them in on the fact that he–
but of course there wouldn’t be anything like that. von karma is perfect.

Their writing is fun~ (that's why I recced so many of their stories earlier, haha)

Brainy Smurf Meta

There's a blog on Tumblr, [tumblr.com profile] brainysmurfofficial, that's decided to do "an overview/analysis of the development of Brainy Smurf’s character throughout the years." They're starting from his very first appearance in print (approximately 1959) until present day (I presume). They're up to 1982 right now, and it's been really fun to read! Brainy was my favorite when I watched the Smurfs when I was like, 11, so it's been really cool to read about him and his origins! Their first post is here!

Shattered Tomorrow

This art is gorgeous; enough said. And the plot is shaping up to be interesting~

Mina's Linkverse

The timeline is broken, various heroes of courage (and Ravio) are being snapped around time and space. Now they have to get along and figure this out, because it’d be nice to not be randomly thrown around y'know?
[

The story arcs are really interesting, and the way [tumblr.com profile] minas-linkverse uses paneling and colors to add to the story, especially recently, is something that’s unique to me and very cool!

Other Art

I'm obsessed with the way [tumblr.com profile] lethalhedgehogs draws Luigi (and Mario, and everyone else). Giving him long hair was a galaxy-brained decision.

The
Bowuigi comics from [tumblr.com profile] pigdemonart | [twitter.com profile] pigdemonart  never fail to make me laugh! I love the way they draw Bowser the most, I think. Something about him in this style is really cute. Also everyone here is a dork and it’s a riot.

Everytime I come across [tumblr.com profile] akiiame-idk  |
[twitter.com profile] akiiame's pic of these two I have to stop and stare at it for a while. They're so squishable! And Mario in that dress!!! <3
Also the fire Mario one is badass -

[tumblr.com profile] factual-fantasy has very interesting ideas for the Mario universe and its lore! And the colors they use are really nice. And these characters are also very squishable and cute! And there's a bunch of Mario and Luigi brotherly content, which is fun!

ok I'm done now haha thanks for reading if you got all the way down here

Challenge #12

In your own space, set yourself some goals for the coming year.
  • I want to write something for my alt. AO3 account (i.e. problematic™ smut). I have like half-a-dozen reasonably detailed outlines already but this is the year I'll start turning those into proper fics I swear…!
  • I've got a headcanon that Rosalina is aplatonic so I wanna write a fic about it! I wanna at least find a good story idea, because I don’t want it to be Aplatonicism 101 (I don’t like reading fics with queer headcanons that just sound like they're reading through a wiki) but I don’t have any other ideas for aplatonic joy yet…
  • I've been in the planning stages of a project where I go through all the fics tagged with Kamek's name on AO3 and read every single one so I can categorize them based on if he's actually a character in them or if you could just replace him with a magic wand taped to a block of wood and call it a day. There's a bit less than 300 fics in there right now, which feels doable. There will be an AO3 collection and probably also a spreadsheet. I will probably suffer massive amounts of psychic damage because I'm not taking fic quality into account. It'll be fun! At least I wrote some of them, so that's…9 fics I don’t have to worry about? (^.^;)7
  • Similarly, I want to at least start planning a project where I replay one of my favorite games (Paper Mario: the Origami King) and record myself talking about it! Kind of like the Let's Plays of old, except I'm not charismatic enough for that, lmao. I just wanna talk about all the cool things and trivia about a game I like. I have to actually play it for a second time though first, so maybe that's the true goal for this year…
  • I got comfortable with making icons last year, so this year I wanna venture into making GIFs. I have all the tools, I just gotta sit down and learn, really.
  • Finally, I…need to get back into Ring Fit Adventure OTL I gotta finish the story mode at least — I don't even think I got halfway through! I need to be exercising more, anyways.

Challenge #11

In your own space, talk about your favorite trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme.

I hardly ever think of things in terms of tropes, so this was a bit tricky!

I write a lot of fluff, so I guess that's something I really enjoy. It's nice seeing calmer/sillier snapshots of a character's life. It makes them feel more alive, in turn. And even if the story is really simple, you can still learn a lot about a character and their relationships with other people based on what they do and how they react to things! Back when I watched more anime I liked the slice-of life and sports ones the best, because everything was pretty low stakes, and we got to spend time with the characters and learn about them and watch them grow as people and it was all very heartwarming. And of course there were usually found family vibes, too, which is another trope I like.

I find that when I'm reading fics and the emotional or physical stakes start getting higher I'm always metaphorically tapping at my wristwatch like, 'alright, this is cool, but when are we gonna get back to the characters just hanging out and chatting?' I've actually dropped shows because they show a disinclination to returning to the low-stakes character interaction-filled romps that they started as (SPOP, VLD, and TAZ: Amnesty, to name a few). Idk after a point conflict becomes boring, especially when it just keeps piling on and circling around itself for longer than it has to, or when it escalates too quickly without earning it (you can't just suddenly go up to saving the world/universe if there's no framework to make me care about saving, like, the characters' hometowns or anything, you know?). Why waste time with that when we could just skip to the end and watch everyone come together and pick up the pieces, instead? There are far more interesting and varied stories in that, to me. The conflict's just a means to get there.

It's a similar thing with hurt/comfort…I did a little bit of Whumptober last year, where whump is something that focuses on the hurt a lot more, and even then I was writing the hurt solely for the comfort. Hell, I downscaled the whump from my original ideas by a lot to make it easier for everyone to be okay by the end of the story, because it didn’t seem like there was a point to them all getting hurt, otherwise. There's gotta be comfort! Otherwise I'm just left sitting with the hurt and then I get frustrated because I can't do anything about it :/ (if I wanted to feel like that I'd just go read the news, lol). I like hurt/comfort especially when it’s a character that doesn’t get comforted a lot if ever that suddenly is, or when it's someone who doesn’t comfort a lot having to venture outside their comfort zone to do so, or when the person doing the comforting doesn't really like the person that got hurt or vice versa yet the comforting happens anyway. Those variants are always fascinating.

Sickfic is something I've been reading recently, as well; I feel like it's something that can marry fluff and hurt/comfort in an interesting way. Especially if what the character's sick with is, like, a cold or allergies or something only mildly concerning at best. I've been reading a lot of RokettoMusashi's sickfic; they've got a lot of well-written and heartwarming stuff that simultaneously provides really fun insights to the characters they write and their relationships to each other. When I wrote my sickfic, I used theirs as inspiration, haha.

Challenge #10

In your own space, create a fanwork.

I've been procrastinating making a couple of icons, so now I've made them! They're of personal headcanons of aromantic Mario, aplatonic Rosalina, and transgender Kamek!

An icon depicting Mario in front of the Aromantic flag An icon depicting Rosalina in front of the Aplatonic flag An icon depicting Kamek in front of the Transgender flag

I also took the chance to update the icon I usually use to represent myself! (My hair got longer, and also I have new glasses~) I made it in the Rinmaru Avatar maker, which was a flash game, but I'd downloaded the SWF file before they killed Flash. So with the help of the Newgrounds player and remove.bg, I can whip up some quick icons to use around social media!

A digital drawing of an anime version of me grinning, holding up a peace sign A digital drawing of an anime version of me holding a book with a neutral expression A digital drawing of an anime version of me smiling

I'll go around and replace them all this weekend, because it's just about bedtime right now, haha.

Challenge #9

In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, time you spent in the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well.

I wrote a lot of fic this year!
  • I finished a fic that I'd literally started in 2011, when I was 12 or 13. It was the first fic I'd ever written, and it's a Cinderella parody! As such, it had a bit of romance in it, which is hilarious to me because I'm not really a shipper nowadays. It was nice to put that one to rest, though.
    • Cinderello: A SonAmy Story | Sonic the Hedgehog | Rated G | Sonic/Amy | Sonic, Amy, Tails, Dr. Eggman, Shadow, Silver | 5 chapters; 8,980 words | For years, Sonic has been the slave of his stepfather, Dr. Robotnik, who has Sonic’s stepbrothers on his side. Everything changes when the household gets a letter…
    •

  • I finished my favorite WIP I've come up with thus far! It was a fic I'd been planning since 2020, and it's one of the longest works I'd written in a while. It's also a work I'm really proud of, because I personally think I nailed all the humor and character interactions I stuffed in there. And I did a good job with the pacing, too!
    • Blizzard Blues | Super Mario | Rated G | Mario, Luigi, Kamek | 5 chapters; 10,084 words | Mario and Luigi had been out for a walk in the cold mountain air when a sudden snowstorm forced them into a nearby cabin. They’re joined by Kamek, who had also found himself unprepared for the weather and, against his best wishes, has now found himself under it. The bros do their best to take care of him, but the snowstorm doesn't show signs of stopping anytime soon...
    •

  • I spontaneously wrote, edited, and published a fic in 2 hours. Sure, it was less than 300 words, but that was still a cool thing I did. And that started a whole series of fics featuring Aromantic!Mario. I'm hoping to add more fics to that series this year...!
    • Red-Green Colorblind | Super Mario | Rated G | Mario, Luigi | 239 words | Oh, Luigi’d seen this flag before!
    •

  • I wrote for a bunch of events with soft deadlines, like Aggresively Arospec Week, Sicktember, Whumptober, and even a little selfship collab on Tumblr! It was nice to prove to myself that I could do stuff like that. I feel like I've gotten faster with writing in general, or at least less willing to hold up the entire process to edit like some sort of perfectionist. Or maybe I'm getting better at nailing things on the first try.
  •

Also, for a non-fannish win, I'm a homeowner now~ That sweet sweet mortgage's given me so many adulting points, lol

Challenge #8

In your own space, create a quiz or a poll (or tell us your thoughts about answering quizzes/polls).

A while ago my Tumblr dash used to be filled with UQuizzes everywhere, and I only ever considered filling them out if they came from two sources:

1. One of the people I follow on Tumblr does UQuizzes every once in a while, and they despise forced self-depreciation questions and questions that reinforce cringe culture or are otherwise super judgy even on a minor level and quizzes that, to paraphrase them, are just an excuse to be mean and/or trauma-dump instead of going to therapy. So I know when they reblog one there won't be anything like that, which is good because I also don't like being forced to talk negatively about myself or feel judged about my interests/lifestyle or be insulted on a silly little quiz.

2. As an aroace person, [tumblr.com profile] aspec-friendly-uquiz has also been a great Tumblr blog to follow for UQuizzes. They reblog quizzes that are ace and/or aro friendly, which basically means the quiz doesn’t assume that the quiztaker is sexually/romantically attracted to anyone or is interested in sex/romance (and any question that does has a 'skip' or 'not interested' option). They also tag for quizzes that are entirely sex/romance free, if they have timed or zodiac questions or not, if they assume gender, and they even more recently added tags for whether a question assumes you experience platonic attraction or contains mentions of friendship! A lot of the tags are freeform, so you know exactly what you're getting into, and it's kind of spoiled me as far as UQuizzes go. ^_^

Challenge #6

In your own space, post the results of your fandom scavenger hunt.

Here's a photo of some of my bookshelf!

A photograph of my bookshelf, contianing various books and figurines and stickers

Most of what I wanted to highlight for this challenge was on there, haha. I artfully arranged the rest~

I've got a Kamek figure, because Kamek's my blorbo. I also bought a perler of him, which you can kind of see peeking out in the photo.

a photo of a sprite of Kamek made of perler beads

I've got my felt doll of Eleven from Dragon Quest 11, which I'd bought from Etsy at the beginning of the pandemic. He's been watching me do all sorts of things since then and it's nice to smile at him once in a while.

A picture of a felt doll of the protagonist of Dragon Quest 11 A felt doll of the protagonist of Dragon Quest 11, sitting on the beach chair decoration of a table lamp.

I've got the collector's edition of Wandersong, which is one of my favorite games of all time (which is why I now own it twice). I think you should play it because it is a very fun and emotional and heartfelt game that doesn’t have any game over screens in it!

I've got a printed version of Down by RockettoMusashi, which is a very comforting and cozy sickfic set in a Legend of Zelda AU that I highly highly recommend reading. The author formatted the pdf for it themselves and shared it for free! And designed the awesome cover!

A photo of a book titled Down, by Wendy Rocket

I've also got bunch of Hetalia manga and stickers and a deck of playing cards I'd bought at a con years ago. I'm not really in the Hetalia fandom anymore, although I really should finish watching season 7 at some point…I know the fandom was contentious, but my time there was fun. (It probably helped that I wasn't really on social media at the time, lol)

…and I guess the Kamek stuff counts as new fandom stuff, as well as the Paper Mario: the Origami King postcards. Though how new is a fandom when its technically lived hidden in your heart for a very long time...?

Challenge #4:
In your own space, add something to your fandom’s canon.

I don’t really align with the "I wish the Paper Mario series was like how it used to be instead of what it is now" crowd, but one thing I will say in their favor is that I want Nintendo to bring Kammy Koopa back. She's only in the first two Paper Mario games, and she fills a similar if not the same exact role Kamek does in all the games he appears in. I especially want something where the two of them interact; it might go like M&L: Paper Jam did with Kamek and Paper Kamek and have them bicker and insult each other the entire time. A lot of headcanons regarding them interacting go that route, and I like to write them that way as well. It would be fun to have official content for it, though.

Also I wanna give Luigi his lightning powers back; a lot of the sports games recently have him use wind powers, and I feel like Thunder is better for him, imo. He's definitely a 'strike powerfully once from afar' kind of person, especially in contrast to his brother's up close and personal fire-like tendencies. Though I'm sure tornadoes align with his character in their own way (I just can't think of those ways right now...).

Challenge #9

In your own space, brag about yourself. Tell us what things you've done that you're proud of; the things that make you the wonderful person you are. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

A Short Rest in Shangri-Spa - Mario & Kamek; Gen; G - Kamek was sitting on a bench. (Slight Spoilers for Chapter 5/Green Streamer)

This is one of the most recent fics I've written, and I'm also really proud of it! All the reviews I got complemented my characterization, especially, which is really exciting and probably the main reason why I'm going to be writing a lot of Mario-verse fics in the foreseeable future, lol. I'm gonna ride this confidence boost as far as I can take it! And in the meantime I'm gonna reread this fic a billion times because, again, I'm super proud of it. ^_^

Ok so this is kind of an old video, and I've mentioned it in a Fandom Snowflake Challenge prior, but a few years ago I wrote a little parody song and sang it myself! It was the first time I'd ever done any sort of audio mixing/editing and the final product hecking slaps, imo.

Challenge #6

In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Lucky for me, I just finished documenting all my AO3 bookmarks into a spreadsheet last night! So now I have a bunch of fic to rec.

The Avengers

Perfect by Reioka - Tony & his bots; Gen; G - Everything Tony has ever given life to has been perfect. Dum-E knows this, because Tony said so.

Switch It Up, Swap It Out by rebelmeg - Tony & Avengers Team; Gen; G - Tony has a weird dream visit from a certain God of Mischief, and spends the next week hopscotching in and out of his teammates' bodies. It is precisely as bizarre as it sounds.

This is a Team Bonding Exercise? by rebelmeg - Tony & Avengers Team; Gen; G - Tony takes the Avengers to his favorite spa for pedicures! Mixed reactions ensue.

what can they do but burn? by Aryadrutting - Tony & Avengers Team & Humanity; Gen; Not Rated - Tony has been building impossible things since his birth. What's one more miracle?

Or humanity and the stones are connected and Thanos should really listen to them.

Sleep Tight by onward_came_the_meteors - Bruce & Thor; Gen; G - Thor hadn't expected to finish the mission with Bruce Banner falling asleep on top of him, but he didn't seem to have much choice in the matter.

Dragon Quest XI

Illuminate by jamiesfreckles - Erik/Hero, Hero & Team, Hendrik/Sylvando; Multi; T - "When the Time Sphere shatters beneath his blade, El is plunged into the past, but he takes his memories with him.

Landing in the past, unhurt but deeply shaken, El looks at the smiling faces of his friends and resolves to keep the future a secret. After all, what they don’t know can’t hurt them, and El will simply have to stop anything else that can."

Haikyuu!!

Setting Tongues by merlywhirls - Kageyama & Hinata, Kageyama & Takeda, Kageyama & Ukai; Gen; Not Rated - Kageyama learns how to open up, how to move on, and how to open his mouth.

Kuroko no Basuke

Friend Request Pending by magnificentbirb - Akashi & Kagami; Gen; G - "There is a notification staring at Akashi from his Skype window: a new friend request. That in itself would normally not give him pause, but this friend request is different. This friend request is from Kagami Taiga.

(aka, The one where Akashi is baffled by friendship but oddly not opposed to it.)"

Boku no Hero Academia

Clenched Fists and Battle Cries by SammyD - Bakugou & Eri; Gen; T - “I like it. What’s that?” she asked, pointing to something on the floor of the closet.

Bakugou took a step back to see what she pointed at and his eyes landed on a large lump.

“That’s my punching bag,” he responded.

“Why is there a picture of the ice boy on it?”

“Stress relief.”

Tall Tales by rythyme (pugglemuggle) - Kirishima & Bakusquad; Gen; G - Somewhere in the forests of North America wanders a friendly red-haired lumberjack named Kirishima Eijirou. Like most lumberjacks, he's strong, brave, and a little lonely. Unlike most lumberjacks, he's twenty feet tall.

Or: Kirishima is a literal giant lumberjack. Kaminari, Sero, Bakugou, and Ashido are normal-sized lumberjacks who adopt Kirishima into their logging crew. The five of them eat pancakes, chop down trees, save small villages, and—most importantly—become friends.

Pokemon

Denounce the Evils by Betwixtyiff & RokettoMusashi - Team Rocket; Gen, Multi; T - All lives touch other lives to create something anew and alive.

With the loss of Team Rocket as an organization, Jessie, James, and Meowth set out to do something they never would have previously dreamed - backtracking across the regions, reuniting with old friend and foe alike, in an attempt to make up for their wrongs. Join the trio as they take off on a determined search to find their white tomorrow on the path of righteousness.

Sonic the Hedgehog

what you see is what you get (just a guy who loves adventure!) by vinndetta - Sonic & Shadow; Gen; G - Sonic the Hedgehog isn't a stranger to love, despite the fact that others think he is. It doesn't matter that he's never dated anybody. Sonic has more room in his heart than anyone can ever imagine.

Fire and Smoke by Speedy1236 - Team Sonic; Gen; T - For some reason, it seemed like it passed everyone's notice that it's a VOLCANIC island. Team Sonic's day of outdoor fun on Angel Island takes a turn for the worst.

A Triple Threat Drama/Disaster/Adventure Short(ish) Story with lots of dramatic scenery and focus on character reactions (and cheap suspense XD).

The Legend of Zelda

Sound of the Sea by Blueskullcandy - Legend (Linked Universe) & Aryll; Gen; G - Wind’s island is small. Almost pathetically so. And that’s kinda the problem.

Because on an island this small, it is impossible for Legend to escape the sound of the sea.

In Emergency Situations, Your Sword Can Provide Medical Attention by RockettoMusashi - Fi & Link; Gen; T - He’s certain he’ll stay with Fi forever if she lets him, but even in some darker world where they part ways indefinitely, he knows he’ll still hear her voice in his heart. Urging him, every so often, to slow his stride and look to the bigger picture. Singing numbers and percentages in his ears when it’s going to be okay isn’t enough, felling his anxious heart with raw data and precise truths.

// Link falls ill before taking on the Fire Sanctuary, and the benevolent spirit that sleeps in his sword finds herself unable to keep him from her sights.

Until Next Time by SemiSolace - Fi & Link, Link & Zelda; Gen; G - As far as Fi is concerned, her purpose is to guide the one chosen to be the hero as he faces his destiny. Acting as a friend to a boy who isn't quite a hero yet is absolutely not her purpose in the slightest. But there are years to pass before the seal binding Demise weakens to a point where intervention is necessary and there is little to do except train Link and entertain whatever idea of friendship he has. She calculates that it won't change much, except perhaps ensuring he is better prepared for what is to come. She is wrong.

For non-fic things, I'd like to shout out this Voltron AMV:

Challenge #4: In your own space, create some goals. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Okay I think I have a few goals for 2021:
  • There are a bunch of OCs I made when I was a kid that I wanna like, make profiles and stuff for. I've been meaning to do so for years, but *shrug*
  • Finish at least the story mode for Ring Fit Adventure (because I really should be exercising more…)
  • Finish writing the fanfic I have planned as of right now (it's mostly Paper Mario stuff, but there's also a Sonic fic that's almost a decade old, lmao. I want to finish that one, in particular.)
  • I had a cool idea a few months ago to take some old a cappella arrangements I had sitting on my computer and actually record myself doing them, so I'd like to get at least one of those done this year.
  • I mentioned this before, but I want to make more fic rec posts. Maybe they'll be weekly or something, I dunno yet…

In your own space, post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

The only fandom I've ever produced original content for is Hetalia, so Hetalia you will get!

A fansong I wrote a long time ago, revisited, and then sung on YouTube because why not. The one linked is the "updated" version I did last year, because the old version kinda sucked (it was from 2013, so…yeah). I'm personally very proud of this one though; I got to use audio editing tools and everything! ^_^

  • Hetalia Meets the Ouran Host Club - Gen; G - The Host Club and the Nations meet! They all become friends (eventually)! Nothing goes wrong (mostly)! They hang out and have a fun time! It's great!

An Hetalia/Ouran High School Host Club crossover fic I wrote in 2012 but rewrote last year because I thought it was funny enough to not leave it in the depths of obscurity! Pretty lighthearted and simple, but I think it's charming!

An old bit of poetry I wrote in 2013 or so and have edited a bit over the years. As you can probably tell, it's based on the American Revolution (more specifically based on how Hetalia depicts it). Also, fun fact: in sophomore year of high school I submitted this into a contest at school and it won so my music director's composer friend (Jane Meditz was her name, I think) composed a song based on it for our choir and we sang it and it was fun!

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Thinking of a favorite canon moment of anything is hard, but something that immediately springs to mind is from the My Little Pony: Equestria Girls movie. Yeah the movie was…not the best…but when I reminisce about the movie I always I end up going to rewatch the Final Confrontation between the powered-up main villain, Sunset Shimmer, and Twilight Sparkle & co. It's a relatively simple scene, but there's a part when Twilight gains the upper hand, and this awesome upbeat music plays, and everyone gets pseudo-magical girl transformations for some reason…I can quote almost all of Twilight's lines from that scene from memory; something about her tone strikes me every time I watch it. And then there's this interesting effect near the end where her eyes are filled with white light because she's filled with magic or whatever…it's always sorta unnerving but also really cool. Honestly, it's the only part of the movie I really rewatch at all (although maybe I should sit down one day and rewatch the whole movie, unnecessary romantic subplot and all)

The movie was a bit of a mess, but at least there was some good stuff! And it only gets better from there!

Day 2

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

So I know that it was 3 or more but it was hard to choose! I narrowed it down to 20, somehow. So! Here's a bunch of fics that I enjoyed reading! There are a bunch of fandoms here because variety is the spice of life!

Ace Attorney

Phoenix's Inferno by prospectkiss - Phoenix & Mia, Narumitsu; T - With Mia as his spiritual guide, Phoenix must journey through the seven circles of sin to rescue his beloved. Written in verse, and modeled after the classic "Dante's Inferno."

Avengers

Epiphany by TardisIsTheOnlyWayToTravel - Tony & JARVIS, Phil/JARVIS, Tony/Pepper; T - The thing was, there were a lot of things Tony didn’t stop to think about, until they hit him upside the head. It wasn’t a lack of consideration for others, exactly; it definitely wasn’t stupidity. It was just that understanding people had kind of always been Tony’s biggest weakness (he was more of an ideas man than a people person), and sometimes, even though he tried, he didn’t always think about things from other people’s perspective as much as he should have. It had never occurred to him that JARVIS was one of those people.

Genius by Jaune_Chat - Tony & JARVIS; Gen; T - Tony Stark finds someone in his workshop late one night, a complete stranger that he knows all too well.

Kidding Around by MusicalLuna - Tony & Avengers Team, Tony & Rhodey; Gen; T -Tony may not be the most self-aware guy in the world, but there are a few things he knows: 1. Iron Man and Tony Stark are one and the same, 2. he’d make a terrible father, 3. and his teammates don’t trust him. So naturally, he’s the only man left standing when Loki ages them all back to toddlers.

This is going to go well.

This, You Protect by owlet - Bucky & Steve; Gen; T - The mission resets abruptly, from objective: kill to objective: protect.

Avengers x Supernatural

The Last Archangel by inukagome15 - Gen; T - No one knows where angels go when they die, not even the archangels. And if one finds himself in a different universe after death? It's one thing to leave heaven purposefully, it's another to find that heaven isn't even there. And Gabriel is alone.

Displaced by TardisIsTheOnlyWayToTravel - Gabriel & Steve; Gen; T - After being killed by Lucifer, Gabriel wakes up in another reality - one with alien invasions and superheroes.

Boku no Hero Academia

Grab the person directly to your left. Dance. by thephilosophah - Bakusquad; Gen; T - he WANTS to say that he's a good component, that his fusions all rock, that's he's the best at this, too. he likes to think that. he'd like it to be true.

Those Who Remain by kemnam - Iida & Midoriya & Uraraka & Todoroki; Gen; T - The other paladins were gone, taken from the battlefield for reasons unknown. Tenya Iida, the last of his order, is left alone and disgraced, haunting the halls of a keep that begins to feel more like a prison than a home. Solitude is his only companion, and he drives away anyone that tries to enter Ironlace Keep. With madness snapping at his heels, Tenya knows it's only a matter of time before he is lost, too. But that all changes when a wily group of adventurers dare to enter his castle and uncover its secrets - and in the process, remind Tenya of what it means to be a paladin.

Bakugou's (WikiHow) Guide to Making Friends by KlavierWrites - Bakugou & Midoriya, KiriBaku, TodoDeku; Gen, M/M; T - Katsuki wants to be Deku's friend again. Unfortunately, he has absolutely no experience with making friends, particularly not with making friends with former enemies. So he does what any dumbass would do: he consults the internet.

Something Borrowed by ThisCat - Midoriya & Uraraka, Midoriya & Kirishima, Midoriya & Tsuyu; Gen; T - Izuku wants to be a hero. No matter what anyone says, his teachers, his classmates, or even Kacchan, he wants to be a hero. It shouldn't matter that no one thinks he can. It shouldn't matter what people think, or say, because the only thing that matters is if he can, and he's at least going to try. He'll find a way. Even if his quirk is what it is, he'll find a way to be a hero without pushing anyone else down.

...but who has ever heard of a hero who needs to borrow other people's quirks just to fight?

Danny Phantom

Territory by toothbrushattack - Danny & Box Ghost; Gen; G - “How do you not know? Don’t you want to have it? To possess it? Make sure no other ghost can touch or harm it? Isn’t it your home? Your place?” The box ghost said, almost desperately trying to explain.

Professor Layton

The Tower of Hanoi by a_mere_trifle - Gen; G - He's been working on this puzzle for nine long years, and the endgame begins today. He shall not lose. Not this time.

Sonic

All that rises must fall by Starfog - Infinite & Big the Cat; Gen; T - Beaten, hurt, defeated, Infinite is found by someone who, to his surprise, does not think he would be better off dead. Now he is being dragged into a world of people who wield kindness like a weapon, that kindness being all that shields Infinite from people who would rather see him dead. They are everything Infinite looks down upon and go against everything he's ever learned, but he has to face the facts: He is but an echo of who he was. He can barely stand on his own, and there is nowhere else for him to go.

Sonic x BNHA

Footwork by herecomestheboom - Gen; T - Sonic is thrust into a brand new world of heroes and villains. He may think that the worst thing to happen to him is being forced into boring classes, but he doesn't know about the darkness hiding behind every corner, eyes watching his every move. He has to learn quickly that being a hero isn't all about fancy footwork.

Voltron

Boom Crash the Sound of My Ship by maychorian - Lance & Shiro; Gen; G -  After a Galra attack splits Voltron, the blue lion is damaged and falls toward the jungle planet below. Shiro follows, and now he and Lance are stranded in hostile territory, fighting to survive. Lance is injured, Shiro is having flashbacks, and help is far away. And the Galra just...keep coming.

Just a Little Death by phoenixyfriend - F/M, Gen, M/M, Multi; M - AKA: The Incubus AU Where There Isn't Actually Any Smut

In which Lance is half incubus, hiding it, and possibly spending most of his time low-key panicking that someone's going to find out. At least Hunk is a good bro that's helping him keep his secret.

Picture Perfect People by AelysAlthea - Team Voltron; Klance; T - Voltron. A place to seek companionship. Support. The consolation of like-minded people. That was what it was built for. It was what those who signed up for a membership sought. For the so-named paladins of Voltron, it is just that. Sometimes, the people we need aren't so easily found. Sometimes we need to find them for ourselves and even then we don't realize they're found until...

Yowamushi Pedal

Super pedals by Aurorealis - Onoda & Souhoku Bicycle Club; Gen; G - In which most of the population has a superpower, and the Souhoku Bicycle club is no exception. Of course, most of the population doesn't have an incredibly dangerous, destructive power, but that's just Onoda.

Life in color, life in motion by Camichuu - Arakita/Kinjou; T - Arakita Yasutomo comes to Hakogaku Academy with neither a functioning right arm nor a purpose. The Hakogaku Cycling Team gives him a purpose in an unconventional way.

And that's it! Thanks for reading!

(Oh also, this Voltron fansong is nice, too)
