Now that I’ve successfully written at least one fic per month this year, I will never have to do so again. This hopefully means I will now have time for other endeavors, such as clearing my video game backlog or working on my Neocities site or seeing if my melodica is still viable to play after sitting in its case unused for almost 5 years or figuring out where to buy a new melodica or going to the library.

…Oh, and also working on all the multi-chapter WIPs I’ve been neglecting, lol.

After so many kidnappings and unwanted advances by Bowser over the years, an especially trying night at the end of which she’d gotten kidnapped by him again has Peach finally snapping and letting him have it. This is some of the aftermath.

This fic exists because I had a hankering for writing this part of the timeline, the low point Bowser has to hit and the uncomfortable truths that have to be dragged forward for him to truly be part of this polycule. Also, I had the image of Kamek kneeling next to a Bowser in his shell, talking to him and threading a hand through his spikes, similar to how he did in Chapter 9 of A Dream of Sunny Skies.

What Peach says exactly isn’t very important, so I didn’t bother writing it. The only important thing was Bowser’s reaction. And sure, he had been terrible to her in the past and she’s definitely justified in snapping and letting him have it, but her words are still allowed to sting, you know? I didn’t want there to be any winners here. Not Bowser, who’s fledgling character development was just harshly stuck down, not Peach, who was filled with a fury she’d never felt before, and now has to sit with how cruel she’s capable of being and the emotional crash that follows, not Luigi, who inadvertently kickstarted this whole mess and had had his own fair share of being yelled at, not Mario, who is forced to be a bystander to this entire ordeal. But they’ll recover from this!

Cool thing about the Nintendo Alarmo: the "its been 20 minutes" music for most of the Splatoon scenes is Now or Never, and as such its a Now or Never that loops indefinitely, which has never been done before because the song was designed to play through once and then stop. I admit to purposefully laying in bed for the extra time necessary to hear it XD

Less cool thing about the Nintendo Alarmo: One of the Pikmin scenes is just a bunch of Pikmin repeatedly drowning and I would just like to have a friendly chat with whoever thought that was a reasonable idea —

(I have beef with a lot of the Pikmin alarms but that one's the most egregious, lmao)

This fic was conspired by this little comic, where Mario is afraid of portraits & paintings in a post-Luigi’s Mansion world.

I like the idea of the skylight that gets you into the Wing Cap level just being a workplace hazard every few months, lol. Don’t look up at the light; the time it’ll take to get you out will eat into your lunch break!

Honestly, I don't think Mario himself realized he was afraid of jumping into the paintings until he got to that room and actually thought about what he would have to do to get to Bob-omb Battlefield, upon which he got a surprise spike of terror about it that he didn't know how to deal with. So he defaulted to trying to pretend it didn't exist. Which was a poor choice, in the presence of the person who knows him the best besides himself, haha.

And I didn’t want to have Luigi confront Mario about his fear, because one thing that’s kind of lame in other Mario & Luigi stories is that scenes like this tend to be super overwrought and melodramatic, lmao. And I’d personally rather die than go that route. So! We swerve around it!

Bowser is very much used to Kamek grumbling under his breath about the amount of work he has to do, work that Bowser gives him more often than not. But Kamek always pulls through with good results, so Bowser never pays said complaining any mind. Maybe he should have been doing so, instead of taking Kamek’s efforts for granted.

I really wanted Bowser to realize that he overworks Kamek, so this fic was born. Also, the imagery of Bowser turning around mid-conversation to find Kamek passed out on the floor behind him was just too funny to pass up, lmao.

I like the argument Bowser and Kamek have, in the hallway outside the medical wing. Took a lot of effort to shape that, but it paid off. I also like hos astute Bowser Junior is. Maybe too astute, but whatever. Folded the “Junior died during Mario Galaxy” headcanon in here because I wanted to.

I’m also unreasonably delighted with the transmogrification/transmog-er-ation/trans-morgan-ratio joke.

Was having a mildly bad day until I was walking to choir practice and saw a cybertruck turn onto my street plastered with advertising for a dating site. Was so baffling that it flipped my mood 180° degrees lmaoooo. What a story that vehicle tells.

Engaged in Problematic Behavior #73 today and read some Minecraft Youtuber RPF fics on a whim. I don't have a problem with any of it on principle but I branched out into the tags of some other youtubers that I've watched and something that just kind of feels bad despite probably not being that bad is that some of these tags are just names. Like, I was expecting Chuggaconroy to be tagged as "Chuggaconroy" but instead it's "Emile Rosales-Birou" and like??? That's his wholeass government name, I'm pretty sure??? Lmao??? It's so jarring 🤣 I'm out here trying to think of the folks in these fics as characters and not real live people but no, we gotta venture away from screennames for some reason 😭😭😭

Anyway most of the fics I ended up reading were centered around the Minecraft SOS SMP series that went on months ago. That SMP was the first one I ever watched, haha. I found some good folks from that series! Especially Pixlriffs; his chill vibes were and still are my favorite, tbh. I clicked on his AO3 tag to read the fics in it and that's how I realized that he was in a different SMP and I'm watching it now for context reasons 🙂 Woo!

Also the reason I found this SMP was because of Mogswamp, who I'd been watching beforehand. He plays on a Minecraft Superflat world, and has been maintaining it for over 10 years now, and what's interesting is the fandom here has taken that factoid and translated it into a backstory where his character's been living in total isolation for that long and then the SOS SMP is where he gets to learn how to interact with other people again and the resulting joys of that. Which is a type of storyline that I personally love, hehe. Though it was hard to get over the fact that it was at least RPF-adjacent 😅 I wish I could excise this broader storyline and find other characters to match it to. Or maybe I can figure out how to use it myself in my own works.
But for now, I think I'm going to list the couple of fics that I really liked. Because I really liked them.

This fic exists because I couldn't stop thinking about the idea of Mario waking up from some sickness or coma or whatever, and the first thing he’s concerned about is not his own wellbeing or circumstances, but that his brother went so long without shaving or brushing his hair and how fucking weird and uncharacteristic that is. Eventually what that lack of personal grooming implies about Luigi’s mental health state pushes its way to the forefront of Mario’s mind, but initially it’s just “???????” for a solid couple of minutes, at least.

I was envisioning Mario having gotten hit by a curse or something that rendered him unconscious. Actually, I was thinking of it like a Princess Peach game; Mario goes down, and Peach is the one going out and getting what they need to wake him up. The castle would be the hubworld, and when you returned after every level or every world you could find Luigi in various parts of the castle; near the beginning of the adventure he’s almost exclusively by Mario’s bedside, later on he’s in the castle library gathering intel to figure out where Peach needs to go next, and later still he alternates between the previous two locations or wandering the halls or standing outside in the gardens a little more relaxed and confident that they’ll wake Mario up soon. Maybe he even joins Peach in the final boss battle, if there is one.

Took a little bit of tearing my hair out but I thiiiink I managed to load up a tumblr blog I follow into an rss feed! I swear it used to be easier in the past...

But I wanted to set up specific tags of theirs to ping to a discord channel so I can unfollow the blog on tumblr, because following them isn't bringing me joy anymore, lmao. But they are a good writer and have good headcanons, so I'd like to keep seeing those. Just not the reblogs and the venting. Or most of the rest of their mutual circle. Hence this solution!

But I'll wait a little while before actually unfollowing them, just in case the rss feed builder I found stops working or turns out to cost money or something. Excited to maybe clean up my dashboard a little, though! 🙂

I literally saw this prompt and thought of this idea immediately, lmao. The plot, the fic title, all of it. It was great.

There was a jokey theory floating around somewhere just after PMTOK released that posited that the reason Luigi was so chaotic/silly in that game was because he had the Chaos Heart in him influencing his actions to be, well, more chaotic. This is a theory I have been low-key obsessed with since reading it. I know that there are a variety of angsty directions this idea can go in, but — as boring as it is — to me the Chaos Heart is just, like. Domesticated. Just vibing in there, giving Luigi passive buffs like being able to survive things he shouldn’t sometimes. It does have a vested interest in its perfect host staying alive, after all.

This one took a whole lot of workshopping to get right, even if the idea was easy. The hardest part was figuring out how the Chaos Heart was going to manifest itself; i.e. how Luigi was going to get injured so that the Chaos Heart could inexplicably prevent all damage. After a few voice memos, I settled on Luigi getting hit by a car, and then everything else fell into place (e.g. what car? → a car in New Donk City → why are they there? → they’re there because of a referral)

I'm only realizing now that when I called my health insurance member line yesterday with a problem they told me to fax some paperwork to them to fix it. Which...hm.

...I'll figure it out, probably 😅 I've got like two weeks before the necessary paperwork gets to me, anyway.

Here’s my annual Kamek and Kammy fic that no one reads! 🥳 Set out to maybe give Kammy a W, this time, mostly failed XD

This fic changed quite a bit from the initial idea! They were supposed to be in a hospital, and then after bickering for a while Kammy would reveal that she got access to Kamek’s medical information by claiming to be his spouse, to his chagrin (and hers). But the conversation wasn’t flowing right, so they ended up back in their hotel instead. The rewrite also makes this fic occur they were younger than in canon, for sure. How much younger? I dunno. I suppose it doesn’t quite matter, in the end.

Also, I added myself to the last scene, hehehe. Love that for me!

I firmly believe if you leave Kamek alone for long enough without the ability to do any evil or even a spot of mischief, he is going to a) start cleaning, b) start fussing, or c) do both a and b at once, somehow. The caretaker instinct runs strong, hehehe. Also, I think Kamek has some long-buried attachment to Luigi given that for a short while, he was under Kamek's care as a baby when his was kidnapped in the events of Yoshi’s Island.

Another Royal Plumbing Polycule fic! Again, the most interesting part of this polycule to me is the chance to have Bowser and Peach reconcile. I wanted to show them getting along a little more with this fic; Peach thawing out a little bit and Bowser exhibiting growth by acting normal when the pretty girl’s wearing your clothes, lol. This entire fic series is being written out of order, and that might negatively impact what I’m, going for, but whatever.

Also I wrote that whatever Peach is sick with is something Bowser couldn’t get, but in hindsight if she’d got a Mushroom-related illness, then the Goombas might be at risk of getting it. Whoops.

Wrote this on a whim, only took like an hour or two! Even though I’m busy with Sicktember prep OTL. But this idea came pretty much fuilly formed so I had to write it down, haha

I'm finding that whenever somebody has a headcanon of a character that makes them not fully verbal, then it is always always always alwaysalwaysalways a selectively mute headcanon. And/or something to the effect of 'they're fully verbal and then they have a PTSD/trauma flareup and then they go nonverbal for the duration of it'. Which is…fine; love the selectively mute folks getting their rep in their fanfictions. But as someone who likes reading about characters that are completely nonverbal/communicate nonverbally, it's incredibly disappointing every time 😔

I'm assuming that the prevalence of this is some combination of a) more people are selectively mute/have speech loss episodes than are nonverbal, so when they project themselves and their experiences onto their blorbos it's just going to turn out that those blorbos are mostly going to be selectively mute or have speech loss episodes, too, and b) writing nonverbal characters is a skill issue that no one's bothering to overcome. Personally I don’t think it's that difficult, but also I've been successfully writing Mario as nonverbal for just about 4 years now so I don’t think I'm allowed to weigh in on that 😅

It also could be that I'm looking in the completely wrong places; there's probably fandoms out there with canonically nonverbal characters, also, so I wouldn’t have to rely on other people's headcanons. For instance, I've read a few fics with Cassandra Cain of DC/Batman fame, and even though she usually sits somewhere between nonverbal and semiverbal, it's always a treat to see her communicate with her family! For that, she's one of my favorite characters! (even though I haven't consumed any Batman-related canon besides the Lego Batman Movie, lmao).

Anyway, I'll accept that people being more comfortable writing dialogue as opposed to nonverbal communication is probably the lion's share of the explanation. I wish people would edge out of their comfort zone a little to try and build the skill for writing nonverbal characters, but I completely understand why they wouldn't (and arguably, the selective mutism headcanons are the stepping out of the comfort zone, anyway).

It’s recently come up in conversation a few times that I write Mario fanfic; I’ve started elaborating to say that I write fics where Mario’s nonverbal because hardly anyone else writes him as such. And the shock and incredulity I get about the idea of people out there writing Mario as someone who talks waters my crops and hydrates my soul, tbh.

"But [not talking]'s like his whole THING!" they say.
"I KNOW!" I reply. And then I say that the recent movie emboldened the people who write him like that 🤭 It's such a fun and delightful way to be completely validated~

(that reminds me tho I need to update my not-verbal Mario collection! I think we're just above 80 fics in it now, which is pretty cool)
