Excited to be able to write this polycule as an established relationship, instead of in the midst of the lead up to it, haha. Reading this over while editing made me realize that I’d gotten really good at portraying these guys’ relationships with each other at some point. It’s very sweet, the little nods to how close they are.

Anyway, it’s very important to me is no matter how close they are, the kidnappings still have to happen. It’s enrichment for them. They’ll start crawling up the walls without it. There’s a fic I need to write, actually, of them crawling up the walls about it.

Apparently Luigi had taught Peach some swear words in Italian while nobody was looking. Today’s Mario’s lucky day to find out about that.

I’d wanted to write another scene or two in this little ‘verse, but I’m feeling pretty discouraged, so I probably won’t. At least I got to write in second person again, and practice my descriptions.

One day, Junior woke up with a fever. That wasn't concerning, at first. Until it turned out that said fever was actually a symptom of a curse, a curse that Mario and Luigi and Peach were about to discover had been cast on Luigi, as well. Now it’s a race against time for Mario and Bowser to get the last thing they needed to break it, before it was too late.

This fic ballooned to grand proportions while I wasn’t looking. I saw the “Quest for a Cure” and “Magical Remedy” prompts, blacked out, and then suddenly I had a 4.5k word outline. And then that turned into this 9.6k word fic. There’s more angst than I usually do in this one, but it all works out to a happy ending, still!

A few days after Kammy visits a sick Kamek, it’s Kamek’s turn to visit a sick Kammy. This visit goes even more poorly than the last one.

Another Kamek and Kammy fic! Love writing these two arguing with each other. This is a sequel to my Kamek and Kammy fill from last year.

I liked being able to get in Kammy’s head this time around; she’s very bitter and hates being seen relying on others, haha. Tried to portray her as as much of a bitch as possible. She doesn’t like Kamek because she views him as soft, unlike her, yet he still got further in his career than her in hers, taking that high-profile “king’s right-hand man” position away from her during the previous King before Bowser’s reign. She still hasn’t really forgiven him for that, especially not in this fic.

Anyway, the line she has at the end about Kamek being under the desk is an allusion to rumors that Kamek rose up the ranks of the army so quickly because of Quid pro Quo shenanigans, and not through merit. Even though it was actually through merit.

Anyway, in this fic she’s forced to look weak in front of the person she hates the most and she doesn’t even win their exchange, in the end! One day I might let her win. One day.

Back Home to Rest
It’s the morning after a crazy adventure, and Mario had forgotten to bring his back brace with him when he’d been out traveling.

Very excited to be able to finish out the Sicktember 2022 prompt list! Now I’ve done every prompt they’d had for that year.

I was inspired by a Tumblr post I’d seen where Mario was headcanoned with back pain. What an interesting concept, especially paired with movie!Luigi’s bad knees, haha. And the bros’ house in this one is based on Sueprstar Saga, with the loft. Because I wanted Luigi to run up the stairs and fall, haha.

I wanted to hold back on the details of Mario’s adventure, but what I’d had in mind for it was an adventure starring a pair of brothers that were eerily similar to Mario and Luigi, except something went Wrong and it ended very bittersweetly for them. That’s why Mario had gone straight home afterwards; the ordeal had hit a little too close to home and he wanted to make sure his brother was alright. I doesn’t know if that came through in the fic, though.

And I dunno if Peach actually has a pool or not for Mario to use, but also I feel like if she didn't and Mario went up to her like “Hi, I need a pool for Back Pain Reasons” she'd be like “Yeah of course, come back tomorrow!” and he’d come back tomorrow and she’d be like “Soooo, my garden has a big pond now, as you can see ☺️”. It’s the same difference, really. Alternatively, she sends a bunch of workers to build a pool or a pond or something similar in Mario and Luigi’s backyard and Mario has to be bodily prevented from going out to help them. Maybe they let him sit and hold stuff as a compromise. Luigi cooks them all lunch. It’s a very cute time.

How to Become Patient Zero in One or Two Easy Steps
Bowser’s having a good feeling about this kidnapping attempt, so when he discovers he’s sick he tries to push through and hide it to see his latest scheme through to the end. This doesn't work out, obviously.

Loved leaning into the comedy of this one. And I like the idea of Junior going to his Mama Peach with concerns, and Luigi just. Bawling his eyes out because he thought he’d killed a man.

Also I read somewhere that Bowser’s favorite color might be purple, so his bed is purple now :D

I didn’t really have a vision for how, exactly, Bowser managed to escape Kamek’s watchful eyes (Aside from repeatedly sending him away) but the scolding he gets for doing so goes on for A While. Partway through the scolding Kamek’s voice gives out and Bowser’s like “whew it's over now” and that's when Mario pokes his head into the room with cough drops and more tea – for Kamek, of, course. Kamek picks up right where he left off and Bowser vows to dunk Mario in lava at the next available opportunity.

Whole and Unfolded
The nights after Peach’s Origami Festival were a little bit rough for those of Bowser’s Castle.

This was written for r/Fanfiction's January 2023 Prompt Challenge. The prompts I used were "No Dialogue" and "2023". This was conveniently timed, because I already write Mario with implied dialogue at the most, and I was already swirling the idea of Luigi losing speech around in my head, because a comment on one of my other fics mentioned it. So putting those ideas together was a no-brainer, and as an extra challenge, I went ahead and made Mario completely non-verbal, too.

Also, this feels weird to say, but I think I’m getting better at fic writing. I'm finding that recently when I do the last phase of edits (which is basically monitoring word choice) before posting, I'm having to do less than I thought I would. So that's pretty cool, that my vocabulary has grown without me paying attention to it.

I'd personally like to thank RokettoMusashi's sickfic catalog because this was the first sickfic I'd started working on (and would have been the first posted, if not for Sicktember) and I hadn't been sick enough in recent memory to pull inspiration from personal experience, so I used their sickfic for inspiration instead. It's all really really good!

This title was the working title, which was the first thing I had thought of. I came up with a different title, In Sickness and In Storms, but I ended up liking the working title better, so I kept it.
