We interrupt this regularly scheduled kidnapping for an important PSA: when it comes to foraging guidebooks, make sure yours is actually reputable, or else you might end up eating something that could make you sick or kill you — or worse, force your partners to deal with the consequences of you ingesting a dangerous amount of colloquially-named sex pollen.

Excited to be able to write this polycule as an established relationship, instead of in the midst of the lead up to it, haha. Reading this over while editing made me realize that I’d gotten really good at portraying these guys’ relationships with each other at some point. It’s very sweet, the little nods to how close they are.
Anyway, it’s very important to me is no matter how close they are, the kidnappings still have to happen. It’s enrichment for them. They’ll start crawling up the walls without it. There’s a fic I need to write, actually, of them crawling up the walls about it.
While doing research about the sex pollen trope for this fic I found a variant of it called “cuddle pollen”; the Fanlore article quotes a fic about it that generalizes the pollen as something that overloads the dopamine and oxytocin receptors. This framing was extremely helpful to me, as I hadn't decided how to make Mario and Bowser fighting each other congruent with being a cure for the pollen’s effects. It also allows me to bring Luigi in too, if I want. And it'll make Mario feel better, that he isn't forced to have sex. His poor little ace heart is suffering enough, right now 😞
One of my Tumblr mutuals and friends istadris also helped me in making this fic, simply by being someone to talk about it, haha. The help mostly came for the beginning of the fic, because originally I started in medias res with Mario already in the room and Bowser and Luigi and Peach worrying in a side room, but that hadn’t felt right. But starting it as a normal kidnapping and then derailing it? Way more interesting! They also gave me ideas for some little postludes, namely 1) one where Luigi talks with Mario and explains more abut how the pollen works and also resolves the fact that Mario had run away from him and also Bowser complains that even though he won his and Mario’s fight no one is taking it seriously because they all think sex happened, and 2) one where Peach and Mario gear up to have sex. Mostly because there’s a joke involving a dildo that I really wanna put pen to paper for, lmao. Even if it’s slightly ooc in the context of the main fic XD
But because of all this, the fic ended up being way longer than I’d originally planned. Especially the middle scene; Kamek appeared and stole a chunk of the show for Blorbo Reasons, and then I’d realized that this was a good time to write Bowser/Luigi/Peach and flesh out their dynamic without Mario around, and that made off with the rest of the show XD. I don’t really mind though. It still came in at just over 3k words, which seems to be my usual fic length.
The scene where Bowser offers himself up for volunteering to help Mario was the main reason I’d wanted to write this fic. It was such a clear image in my head, Bowser throwing that pillow. And I really wanted Luigi to at least briefly consider being the one to alleviate the sex pollen for Mario. Say what you will about Mariocest, but in a fuck-or-die scenario where the only perceived choices are “I fuck my brother and it's awkward at best, but he lives” and “I don’t fuck my brother because that’s incest, and he dies” there is no coherent argument for Luigi picking the latter option (at least, without drastically changing the tone of the work, or adding a bullshit deus ex machina to get them out of the situation in the first place). What you do with that story, then, would be up to you.
Don’t ask me, by the way, how Mario’s got the stamina and willpower to resist acting on the pollen’s urges for so long. He’s just Built Different, I guess XD
Finally, I had the urge to reference a really old fic I’d read what feels like millions of years ago, via having Bowser’s shell be removable. His shell was also removable in that fic, and it was one of the details that’s stuck with me. The other detail that stuck with me was the Koopa-exclusive illness “Koopa Pox” that Junior was sick with. I really wanna work it into a fic or headcanon post someday...But anyway, it was a really good action beat for the moment, I thought, with Bowser showing a rare impulse to make himself look vulnerable on purpose.
