One of my mutuals was making a list of all the traumatic things that have happened to Mario throughout the whole series, and I wanted to add a few things they missed:

The first is in the category of partners that've sacrificed themselves for Mario, and it's Kersti from Sticker Star. I know Sticker Star isn't a very popular game, and she's not a popular character, but Mario did spend his wish on the all-powerful wishing object he'd spent the game collecting pieces of to bring her back to life, so that's gotta count for something.

The second thing falls under Mario's loved ones being brainwashed and its Peach's entire deal in Origami King because like...she's been transformed into origami before the beginning of the game, and everything King Olly folds is not only unable to be unfolded but is also bound to his will or something like that, according to the in-game guide book. And then she doesn't get to revert to normal until the very last set of cutscenes.

Also stained-glass origami Peach will live in my head rent-free forever it was such a Moment, lmao. The way the music kicks in…screenshots don’t do it justice, truly.

The third thing is from the Mario and Sonic Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games; Mario straight up almost dies in the story mode. Like 'mere milliseconds from getting erased from existence and there's nothing he can do about it' kind of almost dying. The most high-stakes battery replacement Luigi and Tails have probably ever done, lmaoooo. That story mode was wild.

I like the idea that Mario’s immune system is really terrible with Beanbean illnesses in particular. Inspired by that bit in Superstar Saga, of course.

And even though I firmly headcanon Mario as nonverbal, I know in the games he talks in his sleep. So I don’t mind folding that in, and having him sleep-talk every once in a while. Luigi teases him about that sometimes, but with how clingy and emotive he can be in his sleep, he doesn't really have much of a leg to stand on, lol.

During my flight last night I’d decided to spend the few hours handwriting some fic; I was going to flesh out an existing idea, but then I remembered a headcanon I’d seen what feels like years ago that claimed that Mario had a fear of falling. Or rather, it was more of a fear of…unplanned falling? Basically, with how often Mario gets flung away long distances and knocked out of the sky and stuff during his adventures, they’d thought it made sense for him to develop a Thing (negative) about it.

Like, off the top of my head there’s the intros to Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Odyssey, Paper Mario, and New Super Mario Bros U, where Peach is Very Much in trouble but Mario is forcibly torn away from helping her. And in the case of all but the last instance, it’s implied that he gets some amount of injured during the process. So now he’s hurt, probably miles and miles away from the loved ones that need his help the most, and has a veritable mountain to climb to go help them. And this happens so much, on even a smaller scale than the inciting incident of an adventure, too, I’m sure — like the Odyssey getting knocked out of the sky twice in SMO, the bridge collapsing in Dream Team, Mario falling from the sky at the end of SMS, even falling from the Rainbow Road in the movie if you wanna count that. I can see how that could start messing with his head a little, haha. Enough that I’ve now got half an outline of a fic exploring that ^_^; It’s interesting to take a guy who's always Gotta Be Doing Things and put him in a situation where he can't do anything but wait and hope he lands on something reasonable, oof. Especially if it’s a long flight, so to speak.

Got to chatting on Tumblr about all of this, and someone brought up the bit in Sparks of Hope when they all have to jump out of the spacecraft. And yeah, if Bowser hadn't shoved his way out I wonder how long Mario would have dithered there…but at least he's surrounded by friends in this instance, so it's probably not as bad as it could be otherwise! Or at least I'm assuming that; I went back and watched the whole cutscene and his frown flips into a bit of a grin soon after the descent starts, haha. I think earlier in that cutscene Mario and Luigi share a nod before running out to the door, too; a reassuring nod, perhaps? Maybe!

We also got to talking about other fears Mario may or may not canonically have. Which meant I got to bring out some nuggets of info I’ve been holding onto for years XD

The first thing is that I'm pretty sure Paper Mario in particular has a Thing about ghosts because there's a part of Paper Mario: Color Splash where you're exploring a haunted hotel and you reveal a ghost tugging on a book, and you get this dialogue:

Which is way cuter than I remembered, tbh (especially all in motion — the way Mario visibly collects himself after Huey points out he's scared is adorable, haha). And I'm pretty sure Luigi's Mansion is canon to this game, because when the Toad at the entrance to the hotel is telling Mario about the bizarre occurrences as of late, he says this —

— which only really makes sense if at least one Luigi's Mansion game happened.

The second thing is that a couple of Mario is Missing! related blurbs on the MarioWiki say the following:

According to the MS-DOS release, Mario has a fear of the dark, which he is increasingly worried that Bowser will exploit his fear and haunt him. This is not seen or referenced in other games, except potentially Hotel Mario when he stutters (presumably in fear) before entering the cave hotel without a flashlight. [X]

In the DOS version, Mario enters the castle alone, as Luigi is too scared to follow. Mario meets Bowser, who is in a butler disguise, and accepts candy from him, despite Luigi's warning not to take candy from strangers. Bowser uses this as a distraction to trap Mario in a net. Despite his captured status, however, Mario in this version nonetheless manages to give contact to Luigi to guide him to the continents to stop Bowser's plans, as well as update him on the situation. Over the course of the game, Mario tells Luigi that he admitted to Bowser that he has a fear of the dark, which strained communication since Bowser is threatening him with his fear. [X]

In the DOS version of Mario is Missing!, [Ludwig von Koopa] cracks a joke about light bulbs and darkness at Mario's expense after Bowser discovered the hero's fear of the dark. [X]

Ludwig's joke in question is, "How many Bowsers does it take to unscrew a lightbulb? Ha ha, only one, and he's dying to plunge Mario into darkness!" And every time Luigi exits a portal door back to the main floor, Ludwig taunts him with "You think YOU'RE in the dark, friend? Just imagine poor Mario without any lightbulbs!"

Which, you know. That's fun. I'm sure that there aren't many people who include Mario is Missing! in their personal versions and interpretations of the Mario universe…but at least there's some sort of canonical precedent if you wanna give Mario a fear of the dark! And have Bowser be mean about it!

Luigi’s day is interrupted by a sudden onset of cramps after lunch. So he lies on the couch to rest, and gets a visitor, too.

Quest for a Cure
One day, Junior woke up with a fever. That wasn't concerning, at first. Until it turned out that said fever was actually a symptom of a curse, a curse that Mario and Luigi and Peach were about to discover had been cast on Luigi, as well. Now it’s a race against time for Mario and Bowser to get the last thing they needed to break it, before it was too late.

And then that turned into this 9.6k word fic. There’s more angst than I usually do in this one, but it all works out to a happy ending, still!

Mario’s really good at being silent support.

Almost home after rescuing Princess Peach from Bowser yet again, Mario accidentally lets Peach on to the fact that he’s feeling under the weather.

Inky Soup for the Soul
A few days after Kammy visits a sick Kamek, it’s Kamek’s turn to visit a sick Kammy. This visit goes even more poorly than the last one.

Another Kamek and Kammy fic! Love writing these two arguing with each other. This is a sequel to my Kamek and Kammy fill from last year.

I liked being able to get in Kammy’s head this time around; she’s very bitter and hates being seen relying on others, haha. Tried to portray her as as much of a bitch as possible. She doesn’t like Kamek because she views him as soft, unlike her, yet he still got further in his career than her in hers, taking that high-profile “king’s right-hand man” position away from her during the previous King before Bowser’s reign. She still hasn’t really forgiven him for that, especially not in this fic.

Anyway, the line she has at the end about Kamek being under the desk is an allusion to rumors that Kamek rose up the ranks of the army so quickly because of Quid pro Quo shenanigans, and not through merit. Even though it was actually through merit.

Anyway, in this fic she’s forced to look weak in front of the person she hates the most and she doesn’t even win their exchange, in the end! One day I might let her win. One day.

Personal Headcanon: Most children in the Marioverse are brought via Stork (the exception being the humans in Metro Kingdom, who generally have kids as we do)

Assumption: Wanting a kid is basically the same as wishing for one

Corollary: A couple makes a specific wish for a child and the Stars grant it, giving the child to the Storks for delivery to said couple

Fact: According to Paper Mario, the Star Rod is the means by which all wishes are ultimately granted

Fact: In Paper Mario, Bowser steals the Star Rod for himself to grant his own wishes, because the Stars were ignoring them on account of the wishes being too selfish

Fact: It is explicitly stated that without the Star Rod, the Stars cannot grant anyone’s wishes

Conclusion: Bowser single-handedly vaporized most of the world’s birth rate for, like, a month or so

...Do you think anyone noticed?

(This general idea probably also holds true for SMRPG when the Star Road broke, but that's not nearly as funny, lmao)

It’s the morning after a crazy adventure, and Mario had forgotten to bring his back brace with him when he’d been out traveling.

Very excited to be able to finish out the Sicktember 2022 prompt list! Now I’ve done every prompt they’d had for that year.

I was inspired by a Tumblr post I’d seen where Mario was headcanoned with back pain. What an interesting concept, especially paired with movie!Luigi’s bad knees, haha. And the bros’ house in this one is based on Sueprstar Saga, with the loft. Because I wanted Luigi to run up the stairs and fall, haha.

I wanted to hold back on the details of Mario’s adventure, but what I’d had in mind for it was an adventure starring a pair of brothers that were eerily similar to Mario and Luigi, except something went Wrong and it ended very bittersweetly for them. That’s why Mario had gone straight home afterwards; the ordeal had hit a little too close to home and he wanted to make sure his brother was alright. I doesn’t know if that came through in the fic, though.

And I dunno if Peach actually has a pool or not for Mario to use, but also I feel like if she didn't and Mario went up to her like “Hi, I need a pool for Back Pain Reasons” she'd be like “Yeah of course, come back tomorrow!” and he’d come back tomorrow and she’d be like “Soooo, my garden has a big pond now, as you can see ☺️”. It’s the same difference, really. Alternatively, she sends a bunch of workers to build a pool or a pond or something similar in Mario and Luigi’s backyard and Mario has to be bodily prevented from going out to help them. Maybe they let him sit and hold stuff as a compromise. Luigi cooks them all lunch. It’s a very cute time.

How to Become Patient Zero in One or Two Easy Steps
Bowser’s having a good feeling about this kidnapping attempt, so when he discovers he’s sick he tries to push through and hide it to see his latest scheme through to the end. This doesn't work out, obviously.

Loved leaning into the comedy of this one. And I like the idea of Junior going to his Mama Peach with concerns, and Luigi just. Bawling his eyes out because he thought he’d killed a man.

Also I read somewhere that Bowser’s favorite color might be purple, so his bed is purple now :D

I didn’t really have a vision for how, exactly, Bowser managed to escape Kamek’s watchful eyes (Aside from repeatedly sending him away) but the scolding he gets for doing so goes on for A While. Partway through the scolding Kamek’s voice gives out and Bowser’s like “whew it's over now” and that's when Mario pokes his head into the room with cough drops and more tea – for Kamek, of, course. Kamek picks up right where he left off and Bowser vows to dunk Mario in lava at the next available opportunity.

Next year I wanna write something about Princess Peach being sick, but I wanna incorporate the game-verse headcanon where she’s a mushroom person, not a human. She deserves a little bit of body horror. As a treat. And then her friends still love her <3

However, I know fuck-all about mushrooms, and I'm not sure mushrooms IRL really get “sick”. So. I'll either have to do a whole bunch of research, or make up a Mushroom-disease entirely!

I used to have a headcanon that Mario sucked at drawing, but now I don’t really think so; I think he doodles things in notebooks or on whiteboards to communicate with people sometimes (because he’s nonverbal). Not the best artist, but frequent practice goes a longer way than you’d think it does!

Anyway the first time he drew Peach and she saw it he was super-duper embarrassed, but she was like “😲 That’s me!!!!!” and then she doodled a picture of him back so now they do that sometimes

Peach: Hello Mario, what should we do today?
Mario: *doodles the two of them having a picnic and shows it to her*
Peach, holding back tears because the drawing is super cute: yeah lets do that itll be fun *adds a little drawing of a cake next to them*

I’m sure she gets used to it and stops being high-key emotional about it eventually, but also she’s still low-key honored that she’s being drawn, you know? Whenever she can, she steals away the notebook paper doodles and stashes them away somewhere ‘cause like. “That’s me!!!” and all. Mario…probably does the same with her doodles of him, lmao

...also something something being depicted in art in an informal casual way by a friend versus in the commissioned regal-looking stained-glass and portraits and professional photos scattered about the castle etc etc.

(Also how much do you think Mario practiced drawing peach specifically. Be honest. Luigi definitely knows and he won't let Mario forget it lmao)

(And I know Peach can draw because the lore says she painted all the portraits in SM64, so you know she at least knows the basics /j)

Some of my coworkers made the mistake of asking me what I do for fun, so I talked their ears off about fanfiction for a bit. I’d mentioned something about how I write Mario as nonverbal when most people don’t (with reference to the Mario movie, also) and one of them said something like "what if you wrote a screenplay" and another was like "or a silent film lol" and y'all could you imagine if I rewrote the Mario movie to make Mario nonverbal? That would be so silly and interesting!

However, I'm not gonna do it, mostly because:

I've never really been a fan of beat-for-beat canon re-writes in general
This is the sort of change that low-key necessitates rebuilding the movie from the ground up, so it's going to take more effort than I'm willing to give it
Any other liberties taken with an interpretation of the movie are really small, and probably have already been done before by loads of people anyway

Also there's gotta be a "Mario movie but Chris Pratt is muted" edit by now right? That's tangential, but I feel like that's a low-hanging fruit thing to do... Maybe it was all talk no action tho. It's Tumblr, after all.

Someone had made a post about movie!Peach never having peaches before, and Mario bringing her some to try. It made me wonder how she feels about peach cobblers and cakes and pies and jams and ice cream and stuff!!! She'd probably love those, too.

And it also made me wonder about the likelihood of her trying to put peaches on pizza. Cursed, but I feel like “your favorite food + my favorite food” isn't a completely out-of-pocket thing to attempt, at least as a joke. I dunno if Mario would let her make that mistake or if he would be repulsed about it enough to stop her...probably the latter XD

Anyway, all the shops in the Mushroom Kingdom have peach-flavored everything now, even things that arguably shouldn't be peach-flavored. Mario and Peach make a day of trying the weirder things and seeing if they're any good or not

Someone made a post about how Luigi was the “safest guy in the world”, because he’s surrounded by loved ones who would gladly commit violence if anything bad happened to him.

This idea is very fun to me. I can't help imagining everyone at some diplomatic function or another, and Mario and Daisy and Peasley are busy absolutely terrorizing some poor fool who'd committed the grievous crime of looking at Luigi weird.

And when Luigi tries to ask Peach to help him wrangle Mario at least (because three against one isn't very fair) she just looks at him and is like, "I don't know what you're talking about. They're just having a very spirited discussion, I think. Do you want more tea?" And then she sips her own and changes the subject, to Luigi's dismay.

(I think if it would actually lead to a diplomatic incident or something Peach would step in for sure. Otherwise she'd defo enable the over-protectiveness, in a “plausible deniability” sort of way.)

With all being said, I’ve been seeing a lot more semiverbal!Mario and selectively mute!Mario headcanons recently, and they’ve truly warmed my heart. I love seeing people play around with how much Mario speaks and to whom~

But also I still feel like I’m the only person with my little "Mario says like 10 words a year maximum, half of those are Luigi’s name, the rest are Italian, 1 or 2 of those Italian words are swearwords" agenda, wahaha

And I think almost every time Mario says Luigi's name it's a jumpscare, lmao. But also Luigi's name is, like, the easiest for Mario to say, if that makes sense. Like, if you were like "say one thing now or the world's gonna end!" that would be his go-to thing to try saying (Well. If he didn't freeze up from the stress of a sudden high-stakes ultimatum, lol)

I feel like I need a new tag in my altverbal!Mario collection for “Mario’s verbal unless he’s under emotional duress (e.g. in the Skyrim intro wagon) where he isn’t”. Or is that just semiverbal again? It doesn’t feel like it. Maybe it is. I’ll sleep on it, I think.

(I’d found a fic today that outright states that Mario loses his words in heavily emotional times. This only happens in chapter one and none of the other chapters of this unfinished work; he's fully verbal in those. So it just feels like tagging it semiverbal or selectively mute is misleading in a way)

Okay this one is, uh...

So I saw a post on tumblr that was trying to figure out what fairytale, if any, would fit Bowsario best. And then I spent the rest of the day thinking about Rapunzel. This was supposed to be a little pithy ‘oh it's Tangled but Bowser’s Flynn’ thing, but then I started thinking about how being locked in a tower by himself would fuck with Mario’s psyche A Lot and then I had a 2.5k word outline oopsies. And then I made a second Rapunzel AU on top of that, with an additional 900 words! Wow! I was supposed to have been working on Sicktember fills.

So anyway these are under readmores because they're super hecking long oof. The allure of Mario angst ensnared me...

Idea #1: Rapunzel with Mario stuck in the tower for Magical Curse Reasons I haven't figured out yet.

I'm not gonna write these because it's definitely longfic material, and I'm just not cut out for one of those right now. And it'd be romance, which. Ugh. That's too long to spend on a romance-centric project. Like, even when writing the outlines it became less about Bowsario and more abbout Mario and how being kept away affects his relationships with his brother and his friends and the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom and himself, and Bowser is also there i guess. But this is still a really really cool idea! Some of the lines and concepts in here really take my breath away. Like, I wrote that! Wow! ^_^
