This outing was supposed to have cheered Mario up. And it had been — until the wind blew strong, and the hot-air balloon basket rocked violently from the force, and Luigi looked up from where he’d stumbled to catch a flash of red disappearing over the wicker woven edge, Mario nowhere in sight.

Wrote most of the first draft of this one on a plane! I’d talked about a headcanon I’d read years ago in which Mario had a Thing (negative) about falling, given how often he’s thrown long distances at the start of adventures or is knocked from a great height or etc. So I decided to write a little about it. Came out to like 7 or so handwritten pages, haha.
Side note: figuring out how Mario could refer to Bowser in the moment without speaking was surprisingly hard! Luckily, some nice Tumblr mutuals helped me brainstorm something that worked. So thanks to them!
